Abstract

One of the big questions frequently asked by Senior High School Students who were interested in studying Religious Studies is about the career opportunity of the department’s alumni. Unlike other applied sciences that have a clear path of the alumni’s career, religious studies seem to vague in providing jobs for its alumni due to its pure/basic science characteristic. This paper proposes the possibility to develop applied religious studies to answer such a question. The author traces characteristics of religious studies from a sociology of knowledge perspective and then proposes eight fields of applied religious studies, which from a sociological perspective, meets the need for the implementation of “Freedom to Learn, Independent Campus” (Merdeka Belajar- Kampus Merdeka, MBKM), a policy from Ministry of Education and Culture, the Republic of Indonesia.

Abstract

Disease prevention is almost always done with a modern approach through medical science or other public health sciences. This approach is the primary reference in mitigating the spread of the disease. In fact, in Indonesian society, there are local wisdoms in the traditions of each ethnic group in tackling the spread of disease, for example, the Javanese tradition. Javanese culture has local wisdom in dealing with pandemics passed down from generation to generation. This study attempts to answer how the mitigation pattern in Javanese culture is. Anthropologically, pandemics can be studied under health anthropology on disease. By taking the case of the Javanese people in Indonesia, this article describes local ways of preventing and overcoming disease outbreaks or mitigating disease outbreaks. The data source of this article is produced from qualitative research through interview techniques, focus group discussions, online seminars, and the study of manuscripts from magazines published in Java. The results showed that local communities, in addition to knowing the causes of disease, also developed ways to prevent and eliminate diseases, and mitigate outbreaks and pandemics. Javanese people see the mitigation of diseases physically and psychically. Physical mitigation tends to be in line with modern medical methods and the application of new normal. The mitigation of psychics is done by using mantras and songs and developing Javanese attitude of “narima ing pandum”  (take it as it comes).

Abstract

In the context of modern science, Religious Studies is a branch of science that has been emerged in the “structure of plausibility” of Western traditions. As a scientific knowledge, Religious Studies differs from Theology and Philosophy in which scholars, like Friedrich Max Müller, applied the scientific and empirical method in their research. In this regard, Religious Studies would be a part of “positivistic sciences”. In applying those scientific approaches and methods at the Islamic Studies which has been held in Islamic universities like UIN, IAIN, and STAIN, and other high educations in Indonesia will cause epistemological and axiological problem. Inter-relationship between subject and object is a main obstacle of this discipline. The method of Western sciences is constructed by empirical approach an sich while Islamic scientific tradition reflected by conviction which proved by empirical approach known as sui generis cum doctriner method. According to that problem, by applying Karl Manheim’s ‘structure of plausibility’ and Foucault’s ‘archaeology of knowledge’, this article attempts to explore the roots of epistemology of Religious Studies in Islamic higher education institution. Furthermore, this article also attempts to introduce the analysis model of Religious Studies in the Islamic institution namely elenctic method. This method assumes that religious phenomena can be analyzed by two phases, firstly by describing all of religious phenomena as what is understood by its adherents, and secondly by analyzing those religious phenomena with theoretical approaches.[Studi Agama, dalam konteks keilmuan modern, merupakan cabang ilmu yang lahir dalam structure of plausibility budaya dan tradisi Eropa.
