Abstract

Kata kunci: health economics, economic development, Susenas, Indonesia Family Life Survey

Abstract

The rising trend of behavioral and experimental economics is observed through a survey ofthe top 100 academic institutions in economics and econometrics. The survey found that thissubject is relatively popular with around 44% of academic institutions offering this course toundergraduate students. Another survey on publication interest found a surge since 2002 thatwas experienced by this subject along with only a few other subjects such as labor economicsand business economics. Lastly, four short experiments on undergraduate students wereconducted in Indonesia to explain economics, and this activity seems to support the studentcenteredlearning that has since became the focus of the Directorate General of HigherEducation in Indonesia. Keywords: behavioral and experimental economics, economics teaching, developing countriesJEL codes: A12, A22, D03

Abstract

This study analyzes the relationship between the various measures of ethnic diversity and social capital in Indonesia, particularly trust and tolerance (towards other religions and other ethnic groups), using a nationally representative survey. The 2009 National Socioeconomic Survey asked almost 300 thousand individuals on social capital from the 2010 population census data used to construct measures of ethnic and religious diversity. The study’s main contribution to the literature is the inclusion of ethnic similarities in the construction of these diversity variables using linguistic tree data taken from Ethnologue. Using the multiple linear regression method, the study found that all measures of diversity are negatively associated with trust but are positively associated with tolerance, even after controlling for individual-, household- and district-level characteristics. Anticipating the possibility of endogeneity in the diversity variables, this study uses geographical variables to instrument these variables. Nevertheless, the use of the instrumental variable regression method does not change the main result.

Abstract

Purpose ― This study investigates antisocial behaviour where participants made payoff destruction decisions (“money burning”) that are conditional on the co-participant being a human or a computer. Methods ― This study uses the joy-of-destruction minigame experiment with Indonesian citizens living in Australia as the participants. Regression methods are used to observe whether discrimination occurs and to identify factors associated with antisocial behaviour. Findings ― This study finds money burning against the computer to be more prevalent than against humans. There was very limited support that such behaviour was correlated with demographic characteristics or subjective norms, suggesting that the presence of a computer co-participant drives the result. Implications ― The results have a methodological implication for experimental economics where experimenters should anticipate that computer players may have an unforeseen impact on human behaviour. Policy-wise, the study shows a relatively cohesive community which may be driven by the multicultural policy of Australia. Originality ― This is the first antisocial behaviour economics experiment that includes a computer as a potential co-participant.

Abstract

Politics as an art of bargaining has gain prominent momentum following the victory of the president-elect Joko Widodo in Indonesia in 2014. This paper estimates the value of political parties under uncertainties over two possible coalitions: the Great Indonesia Coalition (Koalisi Indonesia Hebat, KIH) that supports Joko Widodo, and the Red & White Coalition (Koalisi Merah Putih, KMP) that supports Prabowo Subianto, the president candidate from the Gerindra Party. The estimation shows that the Golkar, the second largest earner of seats in the parliament, is more valuable for KMP, making them expensive to be maintained within this coalition. It suggests that the best choice for Golkar is to jump to KIH, unless the KMP provides substantial payoff to lure this party. Nonetheless, the pure strategy Nash equilibrium in a non-cooperative game of political bargaining shows that even though a party has small fair values, but it still has decisive impact in the bargaining table of a coalition.

Abstract

Against the backdrop of increasing concern over corruption, this study delves into a laboratory experiment investigating the intricate dynamics of bribery concerning the duration of official tenures and the efficacy of punitive measures. Experimental methods prove pivotal in unraveling the complexities inherent in corrupt behaviors. The study unfolds a compelling pattern, shedding light on the interplay between public officials and civilians, particularly emphasizing the impact of officials' tenure duration on bribery. It brings forth a crucial correlation between familiarity with officials and a heightened likelihood of bribery, with extended tenures amplifying this susceptibility. The concept of "fixed pairing" accentuates the role of prolonged official incumbency in influencing bribery tendencies. Additionally, introducing punitive measures with financial repercussions proves effective in curbing bribery incidents and associated givebacks, particularly when applied to bribe recipients, suggesting heightened stakes public officials face. The study demonstrates the potential of dual treatments involving random pairings and punitive approaches to reduce the magnitude of bribes and givebacks. This study underscores the necessity of curtailing prolonged official tenures to mitigate bribery tendencies, offering insights into enhanced governance and ethical conduct through strategic rotational shifts and robust penalties. These comprehensive findings contribute valuable perspectives to addressing corruption and enhancing ethical standards within public institutions.
