Abstract

Hate speech acts that occur in the online realm expressed with words of prejudice and negative feelings are far more dangerous than in the offline realm. Hate speech is a new area in the study of illocutionary speech acts. This new area of speech acts becomes more interesting because every hate speech has various meanings or illocutionary forces based on speaker’s intention. This study aims to analyse the classifications and aims of illocutionary acts and illocutionary forces of hate speech contained in two face book group accounts related to Batu Bara district’s local election. The research method is descriptive qualitative. The data of this research are thirteen utterances/speeches of face book users in Batu Bara district’s local election group account. Data were collected using the documentation method with the help of referring technique. This method is used to observe the expression of the face book users’ hatred on issues related to social, cultural and political background on each candidate. Thirteen utterances analyzed are classified into assertive, directive and expressive and have illocutionary forces namely insulting, inciting and discriminating. This study indicates that hate speech can be identified linguistically.

Abstract

This study examines how meaning is constructed in the song Ordinary by Alex Warren using three linguistic frameworks: morphological theory, discourse stylistics, and conceptual metaphor theory. Most previous studies on song lyrics analyze only one linguistic aspect at a time, such as morphology, stylistics, or metaphor, which limits the understanding of how these elements work together. This study addresses that gap by combining all three frameworks in one analysis, making it possible to see how different linguistic levels interact to build meaning. Therefore, this study aims to analyze how word structures, stylistic patterns, and conceptual metaphors together represent the theme of love in the song. The data are taken from the song lyrics and analyzed through word formation processes, stylistic features such as repetition and pronoun usage, and metaphorical expressions. The findings show that the lyrics mostly use simple word forms and contractions, which make the message clear and easy to understand. Repetition and direct address create a strong emotional and intimate tone. Love is represented through religious and spiritual metaphors, presenting it as a sacred and meaningful experience. This study shows that song lyrics work as a complex linguistic system where multiple levels of language interact to create meaning. The findings offer a useful analytical model for studying popular music from a linguistic perspective and highlight how language shapes emotional and symbolic expression..

Abstract

This study investigates the linguistic features of English used in Indonesian- and English-dominant podcasts through Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), focusing on the ideational, interpersonal, and textual metafunctions. The study addresses the limited comparative research on how English is functionally realized across different podcast discourse contexts. The objective of the study is to identify and compare the linguistic features used in Indonesian and English-dominant podcasts and to interpret these differences through the SFL framework. This research employed a qualitative descriptive design using transcript data from six podcast segments selected from Indonesian podcasters (e.g., Deddy Corbuzier, Gita Wirjawan, and Indah G) and English-dominant podcasters (e.g., Joe Rogan, John Mearsheimer, and Kids Rock & Joe). The selected podcast segments discussed similar themes in current affairs and social commentary. The findings suggest that the selected Indonesian podcast data tends to foreground evaluative and affective positioning through stronger modality, rhetorical emphasis, inclusive pronouns, and thematic foregrounding. In contrast, the English-dominant podcast data more frequently demonstrates explanatory reasoning, moderated stance-taking, and linear thematic progression. These differences indicate that English in podcast discourse functions as a flexible communicative resource shaped by sociocultural context, discourse orientation, and audience engagement. The study contributes to discourse analysis, digital media studies, and English language education by demonstrating how English is adapted and functionally organized in multilingual digital communication contexts.

Abstract

This study investigates stylistic features found in LinkedIn bios written by Indonesian professionals and examines how linguistic choices contribute to professional identity construction. Specifically, the study aims to identify dominant stylistic features appearing in LinkedIn bios and analyze their role in shaping professional identity. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method using a socio-cognitive stylistics approach. The data consisted of 30 LinkedIn bios written in English by Indonesian professionals working in digital marketing and related fields. Data were collected through documentation of publicly accessible LinkedIn profiles and analyzed through data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal five dominant stylistic features: lexical choices, syntactic structures, tone and stance markers, discourse organization, and metadiscourse. These features contribute to constructing professional identities that emphasize competence, achievement orientation, creativity, and professional engagement. The study concludes that language in LinkedIn bios functions not only as a communicative tool but also as a strategic resource for constructing professional identity in digital professional environments. Furthermore, the findings demonstrate that professionals deliberately use language to highlight their expertise, achievements, and personal values while maintaining a professional image. Through these stylistic choices, LinkedIn bios serve as an important medium for self-presentation, networking, and career development within increasingly competitive digital professional communities.
