Abstract

Indonesia has many traditional or vernacular buildings that still exist right now. Those buildings have already functioned partly as tourism asset in their areas, but so many vernacular buildings remain untouchable. Whereas, in the context of tourism, there is cultural heritage which consists of three main components: (1) monuments, (2) architecture or buildings, (3) sites. When we look at vernacular buildings in Eastern Indonesia, the possibilities those buildings to be tourism asset are high. The question should be explored is: what kind of potencies that can be explored, and in turn can be “sold” as tourism asset for vernacular buildings in the villages in Eastern Indonesia? The objective of this paper is to investigate the potencies of cultural heritage from which have possibilities to be tourism asset in several vernacular spots in Eastern Indonesia: Bayan Village (Lombok), Nua One small village in Woloara Village, Sikka and Mbengu Villages (Flores), Boti and Maslete Villages (Timor). Methods to collect data by surveying on the spot to vernacular buildings in the above locations, also surveying related and competent persons. Method to analyse the data by examining the data with tourism theories. The finding is, the potencies of vernacular buildings that can be categorized as the asset of tourism in the above villages are so many, which are architectural styles and cultural festivals in the villages, and also include the approach such as rehabilitation, renovation, restoration, and conservation.

Abstract

Anywhere in the world, whether in rural or urban area, we cannot avoid the issue of global warming. In the urban area, about 80% of our activities are inside the buildings: in the houses, schools, offices, manufacture buildings, hotels, etcetera. Only a few of our activities take place outside the buildings. The conditions inside the buildings for our activities are far from comfort right now. In other words: our activities inside the buildings need some devices to help us to support the activities running well. In fact, some devices to support our activities generally exploit our natural resources and energies that in turn, degrade our environment. There are also some statements that the efforts to fight degrading environment are the domain of the government only. In fact, the efforts to fight degrading environment are our business, the responsibility of all people. “Green” now is the popular word for us, and the new trend for our daily living. Whereas, this is not a new trending topic in our life, but this must be the change in our life style. That is, the need for architectural design, specifically architectural engineering that green enough for the condition of the earth, the changing climate, and degrading environment; need the changing life style. The objective of this paper is to explore the possible things to manage green architecture through green life style. The methods used by examining life style that contributes to green architecture. The conclusion is that some simple life styles can have influencing factors to green architecture.

Abstract

Malioboro Street is a well-known tourist destination in Yogyakarta. This is the main shopping boulevard in town enriched with plentiful vendors on its sides. In order to provide visitors with a more vibrant experience and a comfortable shopping area, this venue has gone through continuous and long-lasting improvement. To further increase the number of visitors, Malioboro also went through a major makeover which was completed at the end of 2018. However, within the current Industrial Revolution 4.0 whose one prominent part (among others) is online shopping, the competitiveness of Malioboro as a shopping boulevard should be approached from a different perspective. Taking this condition as its context, this study seeks to explore how Malioboro is seen fit to respond to the Industrial Revolution 4.0 era. Data collection was done by conducting physical observations, interviews, and closed-ended online questionnaires. Data analysis was carried by concurrently examining all data collected through various means. The study result demonstrates that despite the rapid growth of online shopping, the image of Malioboro as a unique shopping lane will continue to thrive including in the minds of the millennial generation. Abstract

Jurgen Habermas proposes a theory of modernisation based on the notion of a progressive "uncoupling" or separation of some aspects of everyday life, and their take over or "colonisation" by an expanding state and formal economy. This model is criticised by Nancy Fraser on the basis that it ignores the place of gender in the various roles that the individual plays in society and which mediate between the world of everyday life and the "system world" of the state and the official economy. Habermas's argument is further criticised for ignoring the issue of space (the house, the neighbourhood) in that mediation. Further, Habermas and also Fraser arguments however yield to what they call symbolic reproduction and material reproduction, socially integrated action contexts and system integrated action contexts, and also private sphere and public sphere. The above terms will be elaborated more fully in this paper.
