Abstract

The notion of applying ICT to support traditional learning approach (face-to-face learning) is obviously not new todays. This study aimed to seek the significant difference between the mid test and final test scores of students’ English listening and reading skills. Mid test score represents face-to-face learning approach applied from first meeting whereas final test score represents blended learning approach employed after the mid test. The method used in this study was quantitative.  A random selection of samples was carried out involving 133 first year undergraduates in Jakarta pursuing English as a compulsory course.  Data collection technique used mid and final tests of two English skills: listening and reading. This study revealed that there was a significant difference between the mid test and the post test scores.

Abstract

In studying English as Second Language (ESL), learners’ autonomy is needed. As we know, learner autonomy has been claimed to be an ultimate goal of education for a long time and has been identified as a complicated capacity that potentially has a great impact on personal growth and achievement. The autonomy positively affects language learning and it is no doubt that learners’ autonomy is a prerequisite for effective language learning. This qualitative research aimed to describe the strategies to foster learners’ autonomy in writing class. Participants consisted of students at Bina Nusantara University. Qualitative research was conducted because the researcher wanted to understand the context or setting in which the participants of the study addressed an issue connected with the strategies to promote the learners’ autonomy in writing. The result showed that there were two strategies that foster learners’ autonomy in writing class that covered the uses of Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) and student-centered approach.

Abstract

The present article aims to describe to what extent VBee as a web-driven diary writing app affects university students’ well-being during a month of usage. A descriptive qualitative design is used in this research as the details are described and the data obtained during the research are interpreted. This qualitative research data uses a written survey that is questionnaire. Google survey is free survey by Google to make it more practical for researchers to collect the data from the participants. The participants in the study consist of 13 English-as-a foreign-language learners in their second semester at a private university using VBee. After performing analysis on the data, it is found that mostly the students agree that by using this application they can freely express their ideas, communicate their daily thoughts and experiences, convey the students’ doubts or feelings, and build continuous interactions between students and teachers. Finally, some practical recommendations are noted.

Abstract

The research aimed to find out what Indonesian vocational students’ constructions of resilience in relation to academic achievement and improvement of English writing skills post the COVID-19 pandemic. A narrative inquiry method was adopted in order to make sense of the unique and common vocational students’ experiences. Specifically, narrative inquiry informed the whole research process by focusing on three aspects of the research process: data collection, data transcription, and data analysis. Excerpts from semi-structured and focus group interviews with 11 participants from three provinces on Java Island were analyzed. Research results indicate that academic resilience is reinforced by personal qualities, such as the capacity to keep trying, the ability to handle hard circumstances, and self-discipline. It also reveals that teachers’ support, students’ hope and optimism appear to play a protective role in assisting the students to cope with available English writing challenges. Finally, the research concludes with pedagogical implications, mainly for vocational school teachers.
