Abstract

Writing is a course provided for the English Department students since it is one of important skills that must be mastered. However, the process of writing itself is not easy so errors easily appear. In order to decrease the number of errors in writing, types of the errors and the possible causes are sought. By knowing types of errors and the possible causes, it is hoped that teachers can apply some crucial things suggested in this study in order to make the students’ understanding about passive voice construction more complex. This study reports what kinds of errors of passive voice construction found in the explanation composition of English Department students and the possible causes of the errors.

Abstract

This paper is an overview of empirical studies on language across curriculum. The emphasis of the review is on the ‘what’ and ‘how. The ‘what’ deals with the research areas and purposes. The ‘how’ deals with the approach and technique, setting and participants to set out the research. The purpose of the discussion that follows is to help us see what has been studied and how it has been researched. These discussions should help content and language specialists identify the range of factors related to English across the curriculum. The purpose of this paper is two-folds: to present important research model in English across curriculum and to suggest how insights from theory and research can be introduced in the classroom.

Abstract

YouTube is a rich source for teaching speaking in EFL contexts. You Tube also enables students to learn language of the world. The present study aimed to know whether secondary students in Indonesia who frequently watched You Tube in English speak better that than those who seldom.  This was an ex-post-facto study. A questionnaire and speaking test were designed to students speaking ability. T-test and ANOVA were used to measure the different effects of You Tube. The present study revealed that the speaking ability of the subjects who watched You Tube exceeded the speaking ability of those who seldom watched You Tube. Based on the T-test analysis, YouTube gave good effect on students’ speaking ability, however based on the ANOVA analysis, You Tube gave the highest effect on the vocabulary aspect of their speaking ability.Keywords: YouTube, Speaking Skills, EFL Students

Abstract

This article reveals the impact of human intelligence on the English-speaking proficiency of Indonesian adults. The subjects of this study were Indonesian adults aged 18-40 years old as many as 41 subjects. The data of this study were Intelligence Quotient scores obtained through a logic test, Emotional Quotient and Spiritual Quotient scores obtained through a questionnaire, while English proficiency scores obtained through Focus Group Discussion. The results of this research led to the finding that Spiritual Quotient impacts English-speaking proficiency in comparison to Intelligence Quotient and Emotional Quotient.
