Abstract

Speaking is an important skill learned by English student although English covers four skills namely speaking, listening, speaking and writing. Speaking is the main bridge for the students to master English. Unfortunately the fact has shown that the students were quite difficult to improve their speaking skill because they were accustomed to use their native language language in their daily life than using English. The above facts signify that the lecturer should apply the techniques that can motivate students to speak and engage students in encouraging activities. One of the techniques that encourage students to speak is role play. Role play is the choice implemented by the researcher in improving the speaking skill of the first year students at ABA Balikpapan since using role play, the students can express their idea, opinion, and feeling well in their performance without being worried to make mistake. Based on the result of the study, it can be concluded that the result of this research was satisfying. This research claims that it was successful in the effort in improving students’ English speaking skill through Role-Play. Role-Play activity could increase the students’ motivation in joining the teaching and learning activity. Their motivation is reflected in their efforts in preparing the Role-Play.

Abstract

Most lecturers were still rely on the lecturing method to deliver material, how they use the media (whiteboard, pictures, cards) and their teaching methods are less than optimal and catch students’ attention, which degrade the quality of the learning process. The result of preliminary study shows that the previous English summative test score were still 50. It means that their score average was still for all the students in that Second Semester. Therefore, it is necessary to pay attention to instruction that can foster vocabulary development. The research design of this study was classroom action research, which focuses on a particular group of students in a certain classroom. The setting of the research was Akademi Bahasa Balikpapan. The subjects of the research were the second-semester students who took English vocabulary lesson. Data collection techniques adapted to the data to be obtained to determine students' achievement of English test by using Adobe Flash CS3 Media in vocabulary building project assessment in making animation collection that were contained with English sentences and their meanings. To determine the role of the student in the learning process with the assessment of the affective aspects of the observations obtained during the teaching and learning activities take place and the role of the student participation. The results showed that it could be concluded that the implementation of the Adobe Flash TAI strategy in teaching vocabulary could enhance the students’ Project on groups’ laptop in vocabulary the text. The observation checklist and field note proved the students’ involvement in text given.

Abstract

The background of this research is based on the fact that learning outcomes of the the written recount text is still not as expected. Therefore there needs to be an effort from the lecturer to improve the learning outcomes. This research generally aims to improve students' recount text writing skills. Specifically, this research aims for: 1) Obtaining information about whether or not the flow sentence technique can improve recount text writing skills, 2) Obtain information about the ability of sentence techniques flow increases student participation in learning to write recount texts. Procedure This Classroom Action Research includes stages: (1) action planning (2) implementation actions, (3) observation and interpretation, and (4) analysis and reflection. This research was designed in two cycles using flow sentence techniques. The research instrument uses test and observation techniques. Data analysis techniques use Descriptive analysis, i.e. student learning outcomes were analyzed by describing inter-test scores cycle with performance indicators. Observation results were analyzed descriptively based on results observation and reflection. The results of this Classroom Action Research are: initial conditions 15 students or 46% are incomplete, 17 students or 54% complete. In cycle I 8 students or 25% are incomplete, 24 students or 75% complete. In Cycle II 4 students or 12.5% ​​did not complete, 28 students or 87.5% complete. The results of the study concluded that the use of the technique flowing sentences can improve students' recount text writing skills third semester academic year 2019/2020 of ABA Balikpapan. Flowing sentence techniques can also increase student participation in learning to write recount texts. With a classical completeness level of 87.5% in the second cycle show that the learning improvement effort has been successful. The sentence technique is effective used to improve recount text writing skills.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the development stage of learning media in the form of interactive multimedia powerpoints, describe the quality of the learning media developed in the form interactive multimedia powerpoint, and describe lecturer and student’s responses on the use of learning media in the form of interactive multimedia power point. This research was development research (R & D). Population of this research was the second semester of second semester of English students of ABA Balikpapan. Determination sample using random sampling technique. Based on these techniques, obtained 1 class of 4th semester students as test subjects. Data collection technique using a questionnaire in the form of a questionnaire that had be filled in by lecturers and students after using the learning media. Before being tested, the media learning through the media validation stage and material validation by media experts and material expert. The data analysis technique used descriptive qualitative, with transforming qualitative data into quantitative data. The result of this research is an interactive media of communication learning powerpoint which is packaged on a class presentation. Stages in development These media are (1) Initial data collection, (2) Product development, (3) Validation of material experts and media experts, (4) Revision, (5) Product testing, (6) Analysis data, and (7) Revision of the final product. The results of this study consist of two aspects, namely the quality of the media and responses users. In the aspect of media quality, the assessment was carried out by media experts and experts Theory. In the aspect of user responses, the assessment was carried out by lecturer and students. Assessment by media experts got a percentage of 63%. Expert assessment material gets a percentage of 90%. Assessment by subject lecturers get a percentage of 83%. Assessment by students gets a percentage amounted to 65.5%. The overall average rating was 75%. Result of this research proves that this powerpoints learning media is feasible to use based on validation tests by material experts and media experts.

Abstract

In this study the researcher investigated the relative effects of different reading methods on the comprehension performance of the students. The scores of participants who read three comparable passages in three ways (oral, silent and subvocalizing) were compared. Results revealed a significant difference between oral reading and subvocalization, and between oral reading and silent reading. Oral reading had the greatest effect on comprehension performance among the three reading methods examined. All groups reported that oral reading was the most preferred reading method with the majority of respondents feeling the style best supported comprehension. Feedback suggested that oral reading was preferred specifically because it helps in memorizing words and texts, concentration, and practicing and pronouncing words for real world encounters. It is recommended that second language lecturers and students use all available reading methods in order to identify which method best serves their study objectives.
