Abstract

The purpose of this research is to describe the Student Teachers’ Motives in Entering English Education Program of Batanghari University. This research was conducted as qualitative research by using questionnaire and interview. The participants of this research are five males and five females of English Education Program who had passed the 4th semester and whose GPA were more than 3,00. In questionnaire there are 14 questions. The result of this research shows that Student Teachers’ Motives in Entering English Education Program are coming from the extrinsic motive in which almost all students think about their goal after finishing the study in the university such as finding job as an English teacher, working in a company, and international hotel to get much money for the better future. Keywords: student teachers’, motives.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine whether students' learning preferences and academic success are related. The researcher used the correlation method in quantitative design. Questionnaire and student transcripts served as the data collection tools. The sample consisted of 22 students. Data questionnaire used analyzed by using Pearson Product Moment Formula. It was used to analyzing the question base on the category of students learning style. The Second Semester English Education Students’ of Batanghari University. Findings of the students' learning styles also indicate that, out of all the other kinds of learning styles, The findings indicated that the majority of students selected Visual + Kinesthetic learning styles. Additionally, the mean score of 81 indicates that the second semester English education students at FKIP Batanghari University in Jambi had an excellent learning style. The average student achievement score in learning English was 83, which is considered very high. Students' achievement and their learning style did not correlate well. R analysis was 0.750, falling between 0.60 and 0.799, indicating high correlation. between their learning style and their performance in English classes.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the reading comprehension difficulties experienced by second-semester Economic Management students at Batanghari University Jambi, identify the most difficult reading comprehension components, and explore the factors influencing these difficulties. This study employed a qualitative ethnographic design. Data were collected through a reading comprehension test consists of 30 multiple-choice items and a questionnaire consists of 30 item. The sample consisted of 16 students. The questionnaire was administered using Google Forms. The instruments focused on five reading comprehension components: vocabulary understanding, identifying main ideas, making inferences, identifying references, and finding specific The findings revealed that vocabulary understanding, identifying main ideas, and making inferences were the most difficult reading comprehension components. The questionnaire results showed that 56.3% of the students experienced difficulties in understanding vocabulary and frequently relied on dictionaries when reading English texts. Meanwhile, the reading comprehension test indicated an average score of 83.81, which was categorized as good. This study concludes that although students achieved a good average score on the reading comprehension test, they still experienced difficulties in understanding vocabulary, identifying main ideas, making inferences, recognizing references, and locating specific information in English academic texts. Vocabulary and inference were found to be the most challenging components of reading comprehension. The findings of this study are expected to provide useful insights for improving English reading instruction, particularly in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) courses for Economic Management students
