Abstract

Ships of wood are one of the many water transportations which suffer the cultural-economic impact on the use of vessels. Despite it capability to cross the vast oceans and face the change of time, its existence depends on human’s decision to continuously preserve its cultural identity or completely replace wooden ships with modern ones. Nevertheless, such traditional vessels still can be seen even among the modern society. This article discusses the utilizing of wooden ships for sailing the ocean and its existence through time changes.

Abstract

Archaeological and historical data discovered in the eastern part of Kalimantan and western Sulawesi indicates strong relationship between both regions, which dates back to the prehistoric period and flourished until today. Archaeological remains indicated Sulawesi to have more dominant influnces to that of Kalimantan. This article discusses the influnces of Sulawesi to cultural society at the Kalimantan region, also cultural continuity based on archaeological remains from both region.

Abstract

Ratu Kemala Sari is as well-known salt entrepreneur in the southeast region of Kalimantan. She is the spouse of Sultan Adam. In the 19th Century smuggling was one of the most troubling social phenomenon concerned by the sultanate and the people as well. Salt being the most important commodity at that time was also subject to smuggling. Why was salt considered valuable to be smuggled? How was the condition of trade monopoly in the southeastern part of Kalimantan? This article will discuss the position of Ratu Kemala Sari as famous salt enterprenuer and her role as a leading figure for business, economic and politic in the southeastern part of Kalimantan, especially during the reign of Sultan Adam.

Abstract

Banjarmasin and Batulicin harbor are two ports, which have flourished since the past and still actively operating until today. Both harbors are administratively located in South Kalimantan; Batulicin on its east periphery accommodating bay activities while Banjarmasin on its west is beneficial for river activities. Each harbor carries out its own management and business without ever intruding one another. The prime function of both harbors is the outer gate of South Kalimantan.

Abstract

Golongan etnis Cina di Indonesia seringkali diidentifikasikan sebagai golongan yang mempunyai peranan penting dalam dunia perekonomian di Indonesia. Walaupun sebetulnya tidak semua orang Cina mempunyai bakat dalam dunia bisnis. Berdasarkan bukti-bukti arkeologi yang ditemukan di Indonesia mengisyaratkan bahwa etnis Cina pernah berjaya di Indonesia dan bahkan sampai sekarang. Golongan ini membentuk pemukiman di berbagai daerah di Indonesia dengan aktivitas berdagang, jadi pekerja tambang, serta mempunyai keturunan Indonesia Cina. Dominasi perekonomian oleh migran Cina bukan merupakan bencana buat bangsa Indonesia tetapi merupakan cermin buat Indonesia untuk melangkah ke depan.

Abstract

The Chinese ethnic group in Indonesia is often identified as a group that has an important role in the world economy in Indonesia. Although in fact not all Chinese people have talent in the business world. Based on archaeological evidence found in Indonesia, it indicates that ethnic Chinese had triumphed in Indonesia and even now. This group formed settlements in various regions in Indonesia with trading activities, became mining workers, and had Indonesian Chinese ancestry. The domination of the economy by Chinese migrants is a mirror for Indonesia to move forward.
