Abstract

This paper discusses the women figures of West Sumatra and North Sumatra who came from Minang. In some respects, women figure from Minang are more advanced because both the cultural (matrilineal) system supports the level of education, which during the colonial period was better than in other areas. Three central women characters became the subject of discussions in different places, such as Rohana Kudus, Rasuna Said, and Ani Idrus. The research method is a historical method that has heuristic stages, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The discussion results show that the struggles of women leaders are related to the world of writing, or in other words, they are engaged in the academic field, which is not only in the world of education but also in the press.

Abstract

Abstract Medan is one of the colonial city in Indonesia. Its early growth was originally on the back of the opening of the tobacco plantation that was once famous in the world, the Deli Tobacco. As a colonial city, Medan is also regarded as a plantation city because its place is located on plantation land, although there is an assumption before that there has been an ancient settlement. Medan city has quite distinctive characteristic as one of the city with its existence in infrastructure development, especially clean-water management and sewer. Both of these became the focus of urban development so that it became a differentiator from other colonial cities in Indonesia where infrastructure development always follow the existing culture. In the city of Medan it really starts without having to clash with the existence of the old settlement. (Keywords: City, Water, Drainage, Existence, Colonial).

Abstract

This paper discusses the Bordah Zikir tradition which is still maintained by a small group of Labuhan Batu people. Bordah zikir has become part of the culture of the Malay Community in Labuhan Batu that used to maintaining social relations between them. This tradition is carried out in various events such as weddings, circumcisions, and also MTQ activities. With a traditional form that is considered classic, how can Bordah Zikir be able to continue to exist in the current era? What role does this art offer so that it can become one of the social relations activities for the Labuhan Batu community? The approach of this paper is sociological-historical which sees the current reality of the Bordah Zikir tradition through the historical pulls understood by the Labuhan Batu community. The results of the study show that Bordah zikir has a very high social function for the Labuhan Batu community. This function is related to the relationships that are built between communities towards an attitude of togetherness as well as contemplation of the soul to become a better person. This is because the understanding in Bordah's recitation itself contains the history of the Prophet Muhammad's journey to be able to reflect on the whole Labuhan Batu community in the form of rhythmic art.
