Abstract

he study analyzed the concept of feminism based on the readers’ perceptions, who are the active literature students. The study was conducted in mixed method in order to allow the researchers to employ more instruments and eliciting more varied data. There were 20 students of the literature students, who were recruited purposefully. These students were the ones, who have completed the novel in their previous semester. The findings indicated that, despite being viewed as an interesting novel, most of the participants tended to perceive that the main character’s behavior was not always morally acceptable. In fact, the action in committing adulterous relationship with her illegal partner was considered immoral. Despite supporting the action of the main character in pursuing happiness as the main objective of marriage and partially accepting divorce as one of the potential solutions, most of the participants perceived that adultery is not an acceptable way to solve the problem. The participants also considered that dialogue between the couple should be done so that they could solve their problem amicably. In sum, most of the participants agreed that feminism is important as it can provide the women with the chance to stand on a par with the other counterparts. However, they believe that feminism will never endorse such betrayal in the name of equality of women’s right.

Abstract

The present study aimed at identifying the college students’ perceptions toward the main characters depicted in Andrea Hiratas’ novel entitled ‘Laskar Pelangi’. Qualitative method was used to describe the students’ verbal perceptions toward the above-mentioned novel. Eight respondents were assigned to read the novel for two weeks, and further interviewed in semi-structured manner. The findings indicated that there were some important values, which could probably contribute to the main characters’ success, such as being grateful, religious, and motivated. Furthermore, it was also found that the success experienced by the main characters were not only an inner-driven matter. In fact, the other externally driven factors might have significantly contributed to their success, such as parents and teachers’ contributions, which should have been described more in the novel. Given with the current gloomy economic situation, the students’ attempts to accomplish their goals are perceived more difficult to be materialized as numerous intertwined factors might hamper the students’ expensive dream.

Abstract

The role of English in Indonesian pedagogical field has been studied extensively. However, the role of English in the employment context is scarcely scrutinized. Given the increasing awareness of being employable, examining the functions of international languages demanded in the employment context is imperative. The study focuses on some crucial aspects of English in the employment context, such as the workers' motivation toward English, the goals in learning English, and the potential hardships or challenges in learning or practicing English in their employment context. In order to capture more varied data, the researchers employed a mixed method along with a G-form questionnaire, interviews, and document analysis. The recruited participants comprised of sixty active employees who are currently working as permanent employees in a Chinese company. The participants were recruited randomly. The result indicated that even though English was the employees' preferred foreign language, they preferred to learn it through informal sources (e.g., YouTube, Google Translate, and Grammarly). It was also found that only few departments used English in the company (e.g., marketing, sales department, export- import department). The primary language used to support the company's production was Chinese/Mandarin. The outcome should encourage further research on the factories or businesses owned by non-English nationals (e.g., Japanese, or Korean) so that the critical role of English in the current employment contexts can be verified.
