Reading Interest and Reading Comprehension : A Correlational Study Wahyuni Fitria

Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out the correlation between students’ reading interest and reading comprehension. The method used in this study was quantitative and the technique used was a correlational study. The population of the research was taken from students of the eighth grade of SMP Ahmad Dahlan Kota Jambi. The numbers of the population were 47 students. The Total sampling which used all the population was applied as the technique in taking the sample of the research. The data were obtained by using two instruments which were reading interest questionnaires and reading comprehension tests. To measure the correlation Spearman’s Rho was used. The result of this study showed that there was a high correlation between students’ reading interest and their reading comprehension. It was proven by coefficient correlational between students’ reading interest and their reading comprehension was r (0.983), it means those variables were significantly correlated. The result of analyzing the significant value is 0.01, it means that 0.01<0.05, thus, the null hypothesis (Ho) rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan apakah ada hubungan antara minat baca siswa dan kemampuan membaca mereke. Metode yang di gunakan dalam penelitian ini dengan menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif melalui penelitian korelasi. Populasi pada penelitian ini adalah seluruh siswa kelas VIII SMP Ahmad Dahlan Kota Jambi. Jumlah populasi adalah 47 siswa. Pengambilan sampel penelitian diperoleh melalui total sampling. Dalam mengumpulkan data, peneliti menggunakan kuesioner untuk mengukur minat baca siswa dan memberikan tes pada siswa untuk mengetahui level pemahaman membaca siswa. Untuk mengukur korelasi peneliti menggunakan teori Spearman’s Rho. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa terdapat korelasi yang tinggi antara minat baca dan pemahaman membaca. Terbukti dari hasil perhitungan korelasi ditemukan bahwa hubungan antara minat baca dan pemahaman membaca siswa adalah r (0.983), ini menunjukkan bahwa variabel tersebut memiliki korelasi yang signifikan. Hasil dari signifikansi adalah 0.01, hal ini menunjukkan bahwa 0.01<0.05. Abstract

Reinforcement is any response both in verbal and non verbal which modift students’ behavior in order to give feedback on their behavior either as a support or correction (Uzer Usman, 2005). This study focuses on investigating the kinds of reinforcement employed by English teacher at Junior High School 17 Kota Jambi class VIII. Researcher used qualitative method. The researcher also took 2 teachers who teaching in VIII class of Junior High School 17 Kota Jambi as the subject of the study. Techniques of collecting the data were interview and observation. In supporting the data was the observation of 2 English teachers. The result of research showed that the teachers gave both of verbal and non-verbal reinforcement during teaching English in class, such as Verbal reinforcement: Word reinforcement and Sentence reinforcement. Also Nonverbal reinforcement: gesture, proximity, activity and token/symbol. It also proved that giving kinds of reinforcement create good athmosphere into the class.

Abstract

Abstrak The objectives of this study was to find out whether or not there was a significant effect of the using Think-Pair and Share technique at seventh grade students’ reading comprehension of Junior High School Satu Atap Bertam. This research was conducted at first grade students of Junior high school Satu Atap Bertam. This school is located in Muaro Jambi, there are two classes of seventh grade students, and this school uses school based curriculum. In conducting the research, the writer used the experimental research, and the design of the experimental research was a quasi-experimental research. The result of the research found two things: First, the writer has computed the two means score by using t -test formula; the value of t-test was higher than the value of t-table. It indicated that there was a different on the students’ reading comprehension that was taught by using Think Pair and Share technique. Second, the result of the analysis indicated there was a significant difference between the students’ reading comprehension taught by using Think Pair and Share technique and those who were not. Abstract

ABSTRAKTidak dapat dipungkiri, Pandemi COVID-19 membawa perubahan besar dalam segala aspek kehidupan.  Proses kegiatan  pembelajaran dikelas menjadi salah satu aspek yang terkena dampak yang sangat signifikan. Proses  pembelajaran  online menjadi strategi jitu untuk memfasilitasi kegiatan belajar mengajar  dalam situasi merebaknya wabah   virus Covid- 19 yang mematikan.  Banyak yang siap, tetapi tidak sedikit pula yang merasa kewalahan. Menanggapi fenomena tersebut, tim pengabdian  melakukan kegiatan pelatihan persiapan pembelajaran  online  berbasis   Schoology . Kegiatan ini dilaksanakan secara  online dalam bentuk virtual meeting/webinar menggunakan aplikasi zoom meeting.   Sebanyak 64 peserta   yang aktif mengikuti kegiatan pelatihan  persiapan ini. Ke-64 peserta tersebut didominasi oleh guru dan guru magang. Selama kegiatan berlangsung, peserta pelatihan mengikuti kegiatan dengan antusias, hal ini terlihat  dari keaktifan peserta yang dapat bertahan mengikuti kegiatan  online hingga kegiatan selesai, serta antusias peserta dalam mengikuti sesi tanya jawab.  Hasil evaluasi melalui angket juga menunjukan bahwa kegiatan ini memberikan manfaat yang besar dalam membantu guru-guru mempersiapkan proses pembelajaran online.   Para peserta mendapat wawasan baru terkait penggunaan  Schoology sebagai Learning Management System  atau wadah pembelajaran online yang ramah  bagi siswa dan guru. Kata kunci: pembelajaran online; schoology; learning management system ABSTRACTIt is undeniable that the COVID-19 pandemic has brought significant changes in all aspects of life. The process of learning activities in the classroom is one aspect that has a very significant impact. The online learning process is a surefire strategy to facilitate teaching and learning activities during the outbreak of the deadly Covid-19 virus. Many are ready, but not a few are feeling overwhelmed. Responding to this phenomenon, the service team conducted training activities for online learning preparation based on Schoology. This activity is done online via a virtual meeting/webinar using the Zoom meeting application. A total of 64 participants actively participated in this preparatory training activity. Teachers and preservice teachers dominated the 64 participants. During the activity, the training participants participated enthusiastically; this could be seen from the activeness of the participants who could survive online activities until the activity was completed, as well as the participants' enthusiasm in participating in the question and answer session. The evaluation results through the questionnaire also showed that this activity provided significant benefits in helping teachers prepare for the online learning process. The participants got new insights regarding using Schoology as a Learning Management System or a friendly online learning platform for students and teachers. Keywords: pembelajaran online; schoology; learning management system
