Abstract

Malignant melanoma (MM) is a rare skin cancer that is increasing constantly. It accounts for the most cause of death of all skin cancer. High accuracy in MM staging is crucial to give exact information about the prognosis and facilitate the use of the most effective therapy available. The gold standard for skin cancer diagnosis is tissue biopsy, therefore precisely detecting the primary tumor site is crucial. It has high risk of dissemination to regional lymph nodes and visceral organs. Lymph node involvement and distant metastasis are the key prognostic value of MM. Nuclear medicine has been used to detect various primary and metastatic cancer including skin cancer. The aim of this literature review is to discuss about the role of nuclear medicine specifically positron emission tomography (PET), single-photon emission tomography (SPECT), and planar gamma imaging for the diagnosis of MM. We gather literature searches and books related using combined keywords such as “gamma camera”, “SPECT”, “PET”, “malignant melanoma”, “histopathology”. The data we use are limited to 10 years of this review article. Nuclear medicine technique, such as lymphoscintigraphy using gamma camera or SPECT/CT is recommended for early stage of MM, while PET/CT is recommended and have high sensitivity for advance stage of MM and evaluating disease recurrence. Utilising nuclear medicine to aid in acurate diagnostic of MM will give opportunity of a better outcome.

Abstract

Acne vulgaris (AV), commonly known as acne, is a common skin problem that can cause skin damage. AV is a form of chronic inflammation of the pilosebaceous follicles due to blockage. According to the Global Burden of Disease (GBD), 85% of people, including young adults aged 12 to 25, have experienced AV. One factor that often exacerbates the occurrence of AV is the use of cosmetics with comedogenic properties. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine whether there is a relationship between cosmetic use and the occurrence of AV in female students of the Faculty of Medicine, Christian University of Indonesia class of 2023. Observational analysis research with a cross-sectional approach was used in this study. A total of 85 samples were obtained using the research method, namely purposive sampling. Data collection was conducted at a single point in time to explore cosmetic use related to AV events. Data analysis using univariate and bivariate techniques. From the total, 76 respondents (89.4%) experienced AV and 9 respondents (10.6%) didn’t. The Fisher Exact Test results obtained a P value > 0.05, this indicates that there was no significant relationship between cosmetic use and AV incidents in these female students.

Abstract

Condyloma acuminata (CA) represents one of the most prevalent sexually transmitted infections globally. Current treatment modalities focus primarily on lesion removal rather than viral eradication, with no universally accepted gold standard therapy. Potassium hydroxide (KOH) has emerged as a promising alternative treatment option. Objective to systematically review the efficacy and safety of potassium hydroxide in treating condyloma acuminata compared to other established treatments. A systematic literature review was conducted using PubMed, Google Scholar, Science Direct, Wiley Online Library, and Cochrane Library databases. Search terms included combinations of "potassium hydroxide," "KOH," "condyloma acuminata," and "genital warts." Studies published within the last decade comparing KOH with other established treatments were included. From 1195 articles screened, 5 articles were finally obtained on 2014 to 2025. Screening was performed by the authors using Mendeley Reference Manager. Five comparative studies involving 351 patients were analyzed. KOH 5% solution achieved complete response rates ranging from 65% to 88.9%, comparable to established treatments including cryotherapy (54.7-72.3%), trichloroacetic acid (78.6%), and CO₂ laser therapy (88.9%). KOH demonstrated shorter treatment duration and lower recurrence rates in several studies. The safety profile was favorable, with common adverse effects being superficial erosions (14-50%), mild burning sensation, and transient erythema. A 5% potassium hydroxide solution demonstrates comparable efficacy to established therapies, with potential advantages including a shorter treatment duration, patient self-application capability, and a favorable safety profile. KOH represents a viable treatment option for condyloma acuminata, particularly valuable in resource-limited settings.

Abstract

Wound healing is a dynamic and complex biological process involving haemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and tissue remodelling. Disruption of any phase can lead to delayed healing or chronic wounds, the number of which is increasing nowadays. This give rise to growing interest in natural products, particularly essential oils as complementary wound-care agents. This literature review summarizes recent evidence (2015–2025) from in vitro, in vivo, and clinical studies evaluating the wound-healing effects of lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) and related species. Literature searches and screening were conducted in PubMed, SpringerLink, ProQuest, and Google Scholar from 2015 to 2025 using specific keywords. A total of 7,068 studies were retrieved, and after screening, 5 studies were included. Findings indicate that lavender, largely through its major constituents linalool and linalyl acetate, exhibits antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties that support granulation, re-epithelialization, and collagen remodelling. Advances in formulation are further enhancing the therapeutic efficacy of lavender, but clinical evidence remains limited and heterogeneous. Trials with standardized doses and formulations are needed to elucidate the effectiveness of lavender, particularly in wound management.

Abstract

Herpes zoster (HZ) is caused by the reactivation of latent varicella-zoster virus and most commonly affects the thoracic and trigeminal dermatomes. Involvement of the sacral dermatomes, particularly with perianal extension, is rare and can mimic various anorectal disorders, leading to delayed diagnosis in elderly patients with comorbidities. In this case report, herpes zoster in the perianal area significantly disrupted the patient's daily activities, requiring prompt diagnosis and management. A 78-year-old female presented with blisters accompanied by pain, burning, and tingling in the left buttock area extending to the anus. The dermatologic findings included multiple vesicles to bullae on an erythematous base containing clear fluid in a zosteriform arrangement, discrete to confluent, crusted form. A Tzanck test revealed multinucleated giant cells. The primary therapy consisted of oral acyclovir and mupirocin ointment. Herpes zoster involving the sacral to perianal dermatomes (S2-S4) can cause various functional complications, including neuritis characterized by sensory and motor deficits, which can affect the patient's daily activities. Antiviral treatment within the first 72 hours can help minimize complications. Pain should be controlled to prevent worsening the patient's quality of life. Early diagnosis and treatment, along with vaccination, can reduce morbidity and prevent complications, especially disruption of daily activities in patients with perianal HZ.
