Abstract

137Cs radiogenic content in the soil can be used to estimate the rate of erosion and deposition in an area occurring since 1950’s, by comparing the content of the 137Cs in observed site with those in a stable reference site. This experiment aimed to investigate the influence of cultivation type on distribution profile of 137Cs and distribution of erosion and deposition rate in cultivated area. A study site was small cultivated area with slope steepness <10o and length 2 km located in Bojong – Ciawi. For this purpose, the top of a slope was chosen for reference site and three plot sites were selected namely Land Use I that using simple cultivation, Land Use II that using simple cultivation with ridge and furrow, and Land Use III using machine cultivation. The results showed that cultivation could make a movement of 137Cs to the deeper layer and ridges and furrows cultivation system could minimized an erosion process. The net erosion and deposition for land Use I, II and III were -25 t/ha/yr , 24 t/ha/yr and -58 t/ha/yr, respectively.

Abstract

Comparison Of 137Cs Vertical Distribution Profile At Soil Layer Obtained By Measurement And Simulation. This investigation aimed to compare a profile of 137Cs vertical distribution at soil layer in the stable site (undisturbed site). Conservation forest that has been becoming as conservation area since 1925 namely Gn. Pangrango was selected as study site. Sampling of soil was done in Pancawati – Ciawi. Sampling was done by using scrapper ( 20 x 50) cm, with layer increment of 2 cm until the depth of 24 cm (107 kg/m2) or 26 cm (137 kg/m2), and sampling was done at 5 points. Soil samples were brought to the laboratory for preparation and analysis of 137Cs content by using MCA at 662 keV energy. The result showed that the comparison of 137Cs vertical distribution profile between measurement and simulation has a significant differences.

Abstract

The rate of deposition of sediment on the floodplain area is one of the constituent component of the sediment budget in watersheds. Therefore, the sedimentation rate estimation has been made in two locations of the floodplains based on the age sediment obtained using Pb-210 excess technique. Sediment cores were taken in the Ciujung Hulu River floodplain every 10 cm depth intervals up to a depth of 120 cm. Sediment was obtained then dried, disaggregated, sifted, weighing 150–300 gr, placed into the special containers and tightly closed. After a month in a sealed condition, samples were measured using gamma spectrometer Multichannel analyzer (MCA) to find out the activity of Pb-210 total and Pb-210 supported. Based on the data of Pb-210 total and Pb-210 supported, there are three different ways to get Pb-210 excess profiles. Obtained Pb-210 excess data is used to calculate the age of the sediments on the basis of the method of constant rate of supply (CRS). Through the age of sediment layers, can be recognized the existence of transitional zone of sediment deposition rate at both locations. The rate of sedimentation ranged from 1.028 cm/year from the years 1968–1987, and rose to about 2.83 cm/year from the years 1987–2016 (28.95 years) at location 1. While in location 2, the rate of sedimentation ranged 0.676 cm/year from the years 1950–1993, and rose to about 3.231 cm/year from the years 1993–2016 (2 years).
