Abstract

This study is a quasi-experimental nonrandomized pretest-posttest control group design. The experiment group is treated by APOS theory instruction (APOS),that implements four characteristics of APOS theory, (1) mathematical knowledge was constructed through mental construction: actions, processes, objects, and organizing these in schemas, (2) using computer, (3) using cooperative learning groups, and (4) using ACE teaching cycle (activities, class discussion, and exercise). The control group is treated by conventional/traditional mathematics instruction (TRAD). The main purpose of this study is to analyze about achievement in proof. 180 students from two different universities (two classes at the Department of Mathematics UNAND and two classes atthe Department of Mathematics Education UNP PADANG) were engaged as the research subjects. Based on the result of data analysis, the main result of this study is that the proof ability of students' in the APOS group is significantly better than student in TRAD group, so it is strongly suggested to apply APOS theory in Abstract Algebra course.DOA : http://dx.doi.org/10.22342/jims.13.1.80.133-148

Abstract

This study present a general view of inservice training dealing with the implementation of subject matter curriculum in the Teacher Education Institutions. The curriculum is a core curriculum developed by the Subject Matter Team, appointed  by the Directorate General of Higher  Education. The training was  mainly  for  the matriculation program (type A) at ITB (Bandung Institute of Technology) and some advancedcourses(type B). Data collected from the trainees  include some studies (i.e., type of inservice training, subject matter, educational backgrounds  and positions). A positive result is found from 700 trainees selected from 29 Teacher Education Institutions and who had attendedthe inservicetraining in 5 locations centers in both type A and type B programs. However, some obstacles were found also  from  the  trainees, dealingwith differences in subject matter backgrounds and English proficiencies. The obstacles were also found in the inservice  training including, the time  taken for discussions  and repetitions of  the pre-requisite materials, and thein effectiveness of the discussions and individual works.ABSTRAKStudi ini bermaksud mendapatkan gambaran mengenai pelatihan untuk menyiapkan tenaga pengajar untuk pelaksanaan Kurikulum BS LPTK yang disusun berpedoman pada Kurikulum Inti yang dikembangkan oleh Tim BS dan disahkan oleh Dirjen Dikti melalui SK no 36/DIKTl/Kep./1990, terutama untuk TPB (tipe A) di ITB dan sejumlah materi kuliah tingkat lanjut yang baru (tipe Bl di ITB dan UGM. Hasil perolehanpeserta diolah menurut beberapa tinjauan (tipe pelatihan, bidang studi, golongan dan latar belakang pendidikan peserta). Dari 700 peserta dari 29 LPTK se Indonesia, setelah mengikuti pelatihan selama tiga bulan (tersebar dalam 5 pelatihan) dua tipe pelatihan (A dan Bl diperoleh hasil positif dan adanya kendala dari berbagai pihak, baik dari calon peserta, pimpinan LPTK, TIM BS, dan pelaksana pelatihan (ITB dan UGM). Kendala yang berkaitan dengan peserta antara lain berkenaan dengan keragaman latar belakang penguasaan bidang studi, bahasa lnggris. Digunakannya sebagian waktu pelatihan untuk membahas atau mengulang materi prasyarat, belum efektifnya pelaksanaan kegiatan diskusi dan kerja mandiri merupakan kendala yang berkaitan dengan proses pelatihan. Masih adanya peserta dengan hasil yang kurang memuaskan menimbulkan masalah yang harus diatasi bersama.
