Abstract

This study aimed to identify the best green-leaf offerings of Urochloa brizantha cv. Marandu for pasture-finished lambs receiving protein-energy supplementation at the rate of 1.6% of their body weights (BW). The animals were assigned into four treatments, which consisted of varied green-leaf offerings, namely, 105, 90, 75, or 60 g of dry matter/kg of body weight (BW). Sixty-eight contemporary Texel × mixed-breed lambs with an average initial BW of 22.6 kg were used over two years of experiment. The experiment was set up in a completely randomized design, the data were evaluated by analysis of variance and the means were compared by Tukey’s test at the 0.05 significance level. There was no significant effect of year neither interaction of year with green-leaf offer. There were significant effects of leaf offer on dry matter intake (DMI) with behavior of positively linear (p<0.05). There were significant effects of green-leaf offer on final BW and average daily gain, and lambs receiving of 75 g/kg green-leaf offer showed the highest ADG (179 g/d). There were no significant differences in the carcass, meat, and primal cuts between the groups of lambs receiving different herbage offerings. There were significant effects of leaf offer on slaughter weight, hot carcass weight, and subcutaneous fat thickness. Lambs receiving of 75 g/kg leaf offer showed the highest SFT (5.8 mm). Slaughter weight and hot carcass weight averaged 41.52 kg and 20.07 kg, respectively. We recommend the treatment with leaves offer of 75 g/kg BW of Marandu pasture for the finishing of lambs supplemented at 1.6% of BW.

Abstract

Based on the assumption that the time required by the lamb to reach a certain weight at slaughter (slaughter weight) is partially dependent on the amount of milk ingested during suckling, and on the dietary management of the sheep and lamb. Our study proposes to examine the effects of the weaning system on the productive and reproductive performance of ewes supplemented with creep-feeding during grazing on Marandu pastures with their lambs and weaned at two different ages (60 and 90 days). Ewes were divided into two treatment groups (weaning ages) according to birth type (single or twin), in two consecutive years. The experimental period was the time from lambing to weaning. Data were evaluated by analysis of variance and means were compared by Tukey’s test at the 0.05 significance level. There was no effect of year of observation on the parameters measured. Ewes did not show any differences in age and weight at lambing, weight at weaning, weight change, or time return to estrus. The average weight loss was 6 kg and the average time to return to estrus was 49 days. The highest averages for weaning weight (23.25 kg) and total weight gain (19.37 kg) of lambs, and lamb weight-to-ewe weight ratio (51.84%) were observed in weaning at 90 days of age. Body condition score and worm egg count per gram of feces of ewes were not affected by the treatments. The reproductive and productive performance of sheep on tropical pastures is not affected by the weaning system. It is recommended to conduct weaning at 90 days to obtain a better performance of lambs.

Abstract

This study was conducted to examine the forage production potential and quality of Panicum maximum cultivars in a semi-arid environment, in four different periods. Six cultivars were evaluated: Aruana, Massai, Mombasa, BRS Tamani, Tanzania, and BRS Zuri. The experiment was laid out in a randomized-block design with four replicates, and assessments took place in four different periods (establishment, dry season, transition, and rainy season). Forage accumulation rate (FAR), chemical composition, digestibility, and in vitro rumen degradation kinetics were evaluated. There was an interaction effect between cultivars and evaluation periods for all variables, except dry matter (DM) content. The highest FAR occurred in cvs. BRS Tamani (47.0 kg DM/ha/day) and BRS Zuri (86.9 kg DM/ha/day) in the establishment and rainy periods, respectively, while cv. Aruana showed the lowest FAR (14.5 kg DM/ha/day). The highest crude protein contents were found in cv. BRS Tamani in the transition period; cv. BRS Zuri in the dry season; and cv. Tanzania in the rainy season (128.2, 116.7, and 95.0 g/kg DM, respectively). Cultivar Aruana showed the highest average in vitro dry matter digestibility (810.0 g/kg DM). Cultivars Aruana and Zuri exhibited the highest means of the total in vitro gas production (23.59 and 20.24 mL/100 mg DM, respectively). Cultivars BRS Tamani and BRS Zuri had the best response in terms of forage accumulation and nutritional value. The quality of cv. Massai remained constant throughout the year. All Panicum maximum cultivars evaluated here have the potential for use in animal production systems in a semi-arid environment.

Abstract

The evaluation of the nutritional value and parameters of ruminal fermentation of tropical forages is important, aiming at its efficient use in ruminant feeding. This study was developed to evaluate the forage accumulation, chemical composition, protodioscin content, digestibility, and in vitro degradation kinetics of different Brachiaria spp. cultivars in different evaluation periods. The research was carried out in the semi-arid region of Brazil, from April 2016 to April 2017. The experiment was laid out as a split-plot arrangement in a randomized block design in which five cultivars (B. decumbens cv. Basilisk, and B. brizantha cvs. Marandu, Paiaguás, Piatã, and Xaraés) represented the plot and four evaluation periods (establishment, transition, dry, and rainy) the subplot. There was a cultivar × period interaction effect for forage accumulation rate (FAR), for which cv. Xaraés showed the highest mean (54.1 kg/ha.day DM) in the rainy season. The lowest yield was found in cv. Paiaguás in the dry season (24.1 kg/ha.day DM). Cultivars Basilisk, Marandu, and Paiaguás had the highest crude protein content. The highest in vitro dry matter digestibility values were found in cv. Basilisk in the dry, transition, and rainy periods; cv. Marandu in the transition period, and cvs. Paiaguás and Piatã in their establishment. A correlation was found between the parameters of in vitro degradation kinetics and chemical composition. The protodioscin content was highest in cv. Basilisk, during its establishment (5.5 g/kg DM). Cultivars Paiaguás, Piatã, and Xaraés showed low protodioscin values (<1.0 g/kg DM). Cultivars Basilisk, Marandu, Paiaguás, Piatã, and Xaraés can be used as forage options in the semi-arid environment, as their forage accumulation potential and nutritional value are suitable for animal production even in periods of lower water availability.
