Abstract

This research was undertaken to evaluate energy utilization and blood metabolites status of male Indonesian local sheep involving nutrient balances and using urea space techniques for measurement body composition. Factorial randomized completely design was used in this study using 16 growing male local sheep. Factor A was breed which consisted of 8 Garut sheep (av.BW 14.90 kg) and 8 Jonggol sheep (av.BW 13.60 kg). Factor B was different ration which received of diet containing Indigoferasp. and sproutbean waste. The ration offered were pellets containing CP around 16% and energy 15.6 MJ GE kg-1. Energy balance and blood metabolites studies were conducted during three-months trial. Intake, digestibility, urinary and metabolism variables were measured based on total collection method. Methane energy was measured by rusitec technique and methane gas production multiplied by calory equivalent value of methane. Energy retention (RE) was measured by urea space technique. Heat production was calculated from ME-RE. Plasma glucose, cholesterol and urea-N were measured by using spectrophotometry. Results showed that there were significant differences of energy intakes, digestibilities and metabolism among the rations. Animals fed with sproutbean waste ration has higher energy utilization compared to those fed Indigofera sp ration. There were no significant different for all blood metabolite variables among breed and its interaction between combination treatments. It is concluded that sproutbean waste in local sheep ration has higher energy utilization and daily gain than Indigofera sp. Abstract

The aim of this research was to find the appropriate ration energy levels to determine the puberty time of ewes. The study used 12 offspring female sheep obtained from crossing Jonggol ewes of Animal Science Teaching and Research Unit (JASTRU) Faculty of Animal Science IPB with Garut male sheep. The animal age was approximately 2-3 months with the average body weight 9.79 ± 1.97 kg. The treatments were consisted of 3 rations which have different TDN level, namely: T1= 65% TDN, T2=70% TDN and T3= 75% TDN. The experimental design used was a completely randomized design with three treatments and four replications. The measured parameters were feed intake, average daily gain, and the first matting age and body weight. The data obtained were analyzed using Analysis of Variance. The results indicated that the ration energy levels did not significantly affected on the feed intake, average daily gain, as well as the first mating age and body weight. The age of first mating was 180-203 days with body weight at 18-22 kg. It is concluded that the TDN level between 65% -75% has similar response to accelerate the mating of local sheep. Abstract

This study aimed to analyze nutrient digestibility of a combination of various protein sources (coconut meal, fish meal and soybean meal) in the concentrate of local rams fed corn cob based diet. Twelve local rams (26.6 ± 1.5 kg BW) fed corn cob based feed were used in this study using in a randomized block design with 4 treatments and 3 replicates. The treatments used were combination of different protein sources namely R1 = combination of coconut and urea cake, R2 = combination of coconut cake and soybean meal, R3 = combination of coconut cake and fish meal, and R4 = combination of coconut, soybean, and fish meal. Data were analyzed by ANOVA and significant differences between treatments were tested by the Duncan Multiple Range Test. The results showed that the combination of various protein sources did not significantly influence the consumption of dry matter and crude fiber, but the used of protein sources of coconut cake and soybean meal significantly increased (p<0.05) intake of organic matter and crude protein. The combination of coconut meal and fish meal (R3) or a combination of coconut cake and soybean meal (R2) increased (p<0.05) nutrient digestibility. Different protein sources do not affect average daily gain (ADG) and feed efficiency . It can be concluded that the use of corn cobs based diet with protein sources combination of coconut meal and fish meal or a combination of coconut cake and soybean meal can increase nutrient digestibility but has not significantly improved body weight and feed efficiency. Abstract

Asystasia gangetica is one of the plantation weeds that grows under shading area and has potential use as forage. The aim of this experiment was to analyze the cutting stem of A. gangetica regrowth that immersed on growth promotor hormone under different plant shadding. The treatments were arranged A. gangetica plant in a Completely Randomized Block design that consisted of 2 hormone (auxin and cytokinin) and 5 shading (green house, open space, under Indigofera zollingeriana tree, under Bauhinia sp tree and Glyricidia sepium tree). The results showed that residual hormones have small effect on the number of A. gangetica primary branches only. Shading environment increased A. gangetica regrowth, especially on plant height, number of branches and flower development, except Bauhinia shading. It concluded that A. gangetica has potential to develop as ruminant forage due to high regrowth capability. Keywords: Asystasia gangetica, hormone residu, plant regrowth, plant shading

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the hematological profiles of late pragnant sheep fed by flushing ration. This research used twelve multiparous lactating ewes of thin tale local sheep, with the average body weight of 29,75 ± 6,20 kg head-1 and placed in individual sheep pen. This research used a randomized block design (RBD) with 4x3 that was grouped based on body weight of ewes. The treatments consisted of R1 = treatment without flushing, R2 = flushing treatments before and after matting, R3 = flushing treatment same with R2 plus during in the middle of pregnancy, R4 = flushing treatment same with R3 plus during at the end of pregnancy. Ratio forages and concentrate in the ration were 30:70% based on dry matter basis. The observed variables were hematological profiles and nutrient intake. The data were analyzed using ANOVA and the significance of treatments was continued to have the analysis through Duncan test. The results showed that the treatments did not affect significantly to the hematological profiles nor the nutrients intake, except to the amount of white blood cell. The conclusion of this research was the different flushing management for the late pregnancy ewes did not give a significant effect on hematological profiles and nutrient consumption.
