Abstract

This research highlights the dynamics of the development of the gaming industry in Yogyakarta. This study uses a political economy approach and will focus on one aspect of the political economy in Vincent Mosco's perspective, spatialization. The findings of the study found that the two-game developers in Yogyakarta had different characteristics, both resources, to ways to gain profits. This difference determines each developer to expand their business. PT GIT Solution expanded its business by forming GIT ALLIANCE, while Noobzilla grew its business by creating products (games) that were easier to port. The role of government in the game industry nationally and locally showed by BEKRAF and JDV. Even so, this role is considered not optimal in shaping the ecosystem of the gaming industry. This phenomenon is indicated by the support that is not comprehensive to other sectors (e.g., publishers). There is a lack of specific regulations related to the gaming industry that support the development of the local gaming industry. To cite this article (7th APA style): Wahyuono, J. A. (2019). Abstract

This study aims to understand how teenagers know their meaning of pornographic content in the game Dragon Age and The Witcher and understand how this player reproduces the message received. This research used qualitative research methods with the ethnography method. The research subjects consisted of 2 gamers who have different backgrounds on the condition of owning or frequently playing games with pornographic content. The two subjects selected according to criteria, including those who have been playing video games for a long time, are over 18 years old and have free access to video games. The position of each informant in this study shows that they are in the position of negotiated readers. Although both informants actively received pornographic messages in the game, both informants negotiated the meaning of what was received. Each informant negotiates to mean based on their respective fields of reference.

Abstract

Farcry 5 is a popular game in Indonesia and a 2018 first-person shooter game developed and published by Ubisoft. This game uses many symbols in the Christianity religion. Reading this game is crucial knowing that Indonesia has one of the largest concentrations of Christianity in the Muslim world. Using semiotic text-based analysis, we observed how this game represents religion using the structure of religious teachings in the Christianity tradition through symbols in the depiction of characters and narrative plots. The study focuses on Joseph Seed’s character and its environment. Joseph Seed is described as a Father, has a Bible, is part of a militia group, and a figure who has the qualities of a prophet. In the Storyline, Joseph Seed was shown as the one who receives the revelation, has Prophecy, and makes sacrifices. As Indonesia is a multicultural country, understanding religious representation in media is important. There are also fewer studies and concerns in popular media, especially in video games, despite its widely accessible content across Indonesia. This game received commercial success and became the fastest-selling title in the franchise, grossing over $310 million in its first week of sales.
