Abstract

Aflatoxins are naturally mycotoxins occurring found in human foods and animal feeds and are highly carcinogenic in many experimental studies. Agricultural produce like peanuts is prone to aflatoxins contamination, particularly during crop growth periods, harvesting, and drying. Aflatoxins contamination can cause by improper storage condition or pest infestation that favorable to growth of Aspergillus fungi. With certain preventive practices along the length of groundnut or peanut-based products chain can help to reduce the risks of aflatoxins contamination. The purpose of this study was to determine the attitude of the food hygiene practices and food safety of aflatoxins contamination among peanut-based products manufacturers. Face-to-face interviews were carried out using a semi-structured questionnaire with 44 manufacturers. Data was analyzed using mean score analysis and logistic regression. The total mean score analysis revealed that most of the manufacturers had general knowledge about aflatoxins contamination and food safety (2.695). Meanwhile, the total mean score for attitude showed a favorable attitude towards aflatoxins contamination and food safety (4.254) among the manufacturers. Most of the manufacturers follow food safety and hygiene practices towards aflatoxins contamination in producing peanut-based products (2.744). Results from logistic regression analysis indicated that knowledge (p=0.081), attitude (p=0.055), and employee training (p=0.099) have a significantly positive relationship towards hygiene practices and food safety among the manufacturers. There is a need for the manufactures to have proper and continuous training for their workers in ensuring basic principles of food safety and important rules of food handling in personal hygiene and sanitation are followed and be as part of their social responsibilities for serving the safe and quality of food products to consumers.

Abstract

Halal logistics is an approach to avoid contamination of perishables, raw materials, and food products during distribution activities taking into consideration the need for Halalan toyibban products for consumption by Muslim consumers. The Malaysian Standard for Halal Logistics (MS 2400:2010) provides the guidelines on halal logistics based on the Shariah law, for logistics providers to specialize in transportation, warehousing, and retailing. The requirements for halal logistics involve specifications throughout processing, handling, distribution, storage, display, serving, packaging, and labelling of the products. There are concerns on logistics providers meeting the required standards on halal logistics implementation. This study thereby strives to investigate factors that influence halal logistics implementation among food-based logistics providers. Face-to face interviews were carried out with 156 managerial representatives of logistics companies located in Peninsular Malaysia. Descriptive analysis was used for company profiling, while factor analysis and logistics regression analysis were carried out to determine influential factors to halal logistics implementation among the logistics providers. Support from management, enforcement of Halal Assurance System (HAS), environment controls, employee acceptance, and company vision to change are the factors identified influencing halal logistics implementation among logistics providers.

Abstract

In a volatile global marketplace, the implementation of agility is viewed as fundamental key strategic consideration for the survival. In order to achieve competitive advantage and ready to adapt to potential changes, implementation of agility in the palm oil industry is considered to be major challenges due to different obstacles. However, these obstacles can be overcome with the implementation of a proper strategic decision as well as high commitments from all management levels to make changes in day-to-day activities. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the obstacles in implementing agility in the Malaysian Palm Oil Industry (MPOI). The survey was conducted in Peninsular Malaysia with 69 oil palm plantation estates. The mean ranking analysis was used to ascertain the rank of various agile statements for its implementation in the organization. The study revealed that strict budget was the biggest obstacle along with laid back attitude of the employee for implementing agility in the organization. The outcomes of this research provide an invaluable information to all strategic decision makers who desire their organizations to be an agile and be competitive in the market and to sustain in todays competitive market as well as to maintain its dominant position in the world market.

Abstract

The food retail sector is known for its supply chain dependency. The delicate nature of its products emphasizes smooth movement of forward supply chain. The size of this industry however results in clogging of its supply chain from backward movement of packaging and food materials. The management of these products required adaptation of the supply chain to returns and waste management. This resulted in development of reverse logistics process, which has been successfully accepted by industries across the globe. Studies on reverse logistics adoption across global industries and its complete immersion into global supply chains have been widely conducted. The situation of research on reverse logistics adoption in Malaysian food retail industry is however restricted. The limited number of studies conducted on recent developments in Malaysian food retail industry and reverse logistics indicate a major gap in sustainable logistics studies. Considering the importance given to green movement by the government of Malaysia, it is necessary to understand this sustainable logistics practices. This study aims to investigate the level of reverse logistics adoption by retailers in Malaysia. The results highlight present scenario of reverse logistics processes of return and waste management, determinants to reverse logistics adoption, benefits obtained by retailers from reverse logistics and barriers to adoption of reverse logistics. The indifference of consumers to greening of retail operations acts as a major inhibitor to adoption of reverse practices by retailers. This study could be used as a precursor for further detailed studies on this issue.
