Abstract

This study compares the paddy production efficiency and farmers environmental awareness using both stochastic frontier analysis (SFA) and data envelopment analysis (DEA), the primary data collected from paddy farmer organizations known as Pertubuhan Peladang Kawasan (PPK) under Muda Agricultural Development Authority, Kedah, Malaysia. From the results, the coefficients of area and wage are observed significant and positive impact on paddy production while the effect of overall cost, cost on seed and fertilizer are found negative but the cost on fertilizer is recorded significant. The knowledge on environment and contract with agricultural officers are two exogenous factors that has positive significant impact while the education of the farmer factor has a negative significant impact. All the PPKs performance considered is observed on an average but they have the opportunity to increase more than 50% of their production by using same amount of inputs. The performance of Kerpan PPK is found higher than that of other PPKs when the effects of exogenous factors are considered in SFA. The performance of Kubang Pasu PPK is found minimum comparing to the other PPKs using DEA which is observed similar with SFA with exogenous factors. Again, the Kepala Batas PPK is recorded higher relative performance.

Abstract

In Malaysia, Small and Medium-sized Enterprise (SME) of food manufacturing industry is the second highest contributor in manufacturing sector and plays an important role to the economic development and growth. Hence, monitoring process of the industry should be occupied comprehensively and appropriately even though it is categorized under small- scale organization. Shrimp paste production is one of the small-scale food production that is popular in Malaysia. In this study, a performance of shrimp paste production is measured by using simulation approach. A discrete event simulation model is developed to illustrate the processes in the production line which involved four major processes. From the model, it is estimated that the average process time taken to produce 2000 pieces of shrimp paste is 235.13 minutes while the average waiting time taken in the operation system is 89.21 minutes. The findings also show that the bottleneck of the production process is found to be at packaging process and some of the resources are not fully utilized.

Abstract

The availability of spare parts is very crucial to enable the maintenance tasks to be performed when required. Although failures occur at random, a certain amount of spare parts should be available to minimize the downtime required for repairing or replacing the failed items. Particularly when preventive maintenance is involved, spare parts may be needed to replace the defective but still working plant items. Thus, spare parts and planned maintenance are significantly related and should be studied together. By implementing the delay time concept, this study focus on periodic order policy and simultaneously optimize three decisions problems, namely inspection interval, order interval and maximum stock level. A numerical example is presented to illustrate the ability of the model.

Abstract

The selection of green-based suppliers remains a challenge for manufacturing firms in Indonesia. In today's business landscape, it is crucial to consider green aspects as part of sustainability practices when choosing suppliers. However, there is a limited number of studies providing frameworks for selecting suppliers based on green factors, particularly in developing countries. This study aimed to propose a framework for selecting suppliers using multicriteria decision-making (MCDM) techniques. A case study was conducted in an Indonesian metal manufacturing company that considers carbon reduction and incorporates traditional supplier selection factors such as quality, cost, and capacity. The study integrated two MCDM techniques, namely the best-worst method (BWM) and Višekriterijumsko Kompromisno Rangiranje (VIKOR), to evaluate and select green-based suppliers. BWM was employed to determine the weights of the criteria, while VIKOR ranked the suppliers. Seven criteria were identified, including cost (C1), quality (C2), delivery time (C3), technology application (C4), compliance with environmental regulations (C5), green practice certification (C6), and green efforts (C7). Nine suppliers were screened and ranked accordingly. The results indicate that quality, delivery time, and cost are the top three ranked criteria based on their importance. Further, this study includes nine suppliers in which supplier S7 demonstrates the best performance compared to the others. This study highlights that in Indonesia, most organizations tend to prioritize traditional criteria, while green factors are still overlooked. However, the company examined in this study has taken the initiative to include environmental factors in its decision-making process. The findings of this study contribute to the development of a framework for selecting green suppliers in a developing country context.
