Abstract

Social enterprises are expected to bring significant positive impact on Indonesia's economy and may help to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Social enterprises empower minorities by providing more opportunities for a sustainable means of livelihood, especially for low-income and disadvantaged groups. However, despite its potential, financial issues remain a significant barrier for the viability of social enterprises in Indonesia. Cash waqf is one of the Islamic social finance vehicles that can be used to invest and manage funds to address a variety of social issues related to the SDGs. Hence, this study aims to propose cash waqf model for social enterprise in achieving the SDGs in Indonesia and to assesses the potentials and opportunities of developing the proposed model in Indonesia. This study employs a qualitative research approach, with primary data gathered from interviews of relevant stakeholders. This study finds that, the cash waqf can solve a multitude of financial issues faced by many social enterprises in Indonesia by enlarging their pool of financing support. The possibilities and opportunities of developing the cash waqf model for social enterprise include alternative funding for social enterprise, alternative waqf for waqif, an increase in nazhir, and more effective contribution to the SDGs.

Abstract

The access to capital is very crucial for ensuring the financial sustainability of microfinance clients. It is also equally important to determine the demand for microfinance services among the clients. This study aims to identify the factors affecting the demand for Islamic microfinance (IsMF) services among the women micro-entrepreneurs in Malaysia. This study has collected a total of 250 samples from the field survey on women micro-entrepreneurs who are also the clients of Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia (AIM). In addition, Partial Least Squares (PLS) method used to identify the potential factors (4As) i.e., affordability, accessibility, adequacy and awareness affecting the demand for IsMF. The results show that only “accessibility” has significant and positive relation with the demand for IsMF. Besides, the measurements items of accessibility such as distance of IsMF institution, collateral requirement, guarantor requirement, application procedure and process, repayment method, service efficiency, advise and consultation, and number of IsMF centers are the key factors affecting the demand for IsMF services in Malaysia. This paper provides some insights for the policy makers of Islamic microfinance and recommends that IsMF providers should take accessibility factor into greater consideration for the economic upliftment of women in microenterprises in Malaysia

Abstract

Many studies have highlighted a low literacy level of waqf among Muslims all over the world. In Indonesia, an effort to measure the level of waqf literacy using an index was initiated by the Indonesian Waqf Board in 2020. The result has proven that there is a low level of waqf literacy in Indonesia. This study aims to explore the reasons behind the low level of waqf literacy and understand the importance of waqf literacy. Based on a literature survey, the following aspects need to be clearly explained and elaborated to effectively improve waqf literacy among the public. First, the unique characteristics of waqf compared to other Islamic alms; second, waqf literacy is positively related to waqf collection; third, the utilization of waqf can be further enhanced when the literacy is higher; and fourth, disputes and conflicts about waqf ownership are frequently due to lack of waqf literacy. In summary, this study is expected to increase the interest and attention of all stakeholders toward enhancing waqf literacy. Waqf authorities and waqf institutions are encouraged to intensify education and socialization about waqf, while researchers are expected to study more on waqf literacy. To further develop the waqf sector, it is necessary to have a road map to increase waqf literacy. Originality/Value: The study aims to explore the reasons behind the importance of waqf literacy in Indonesia. Identifying these reasons in the Indonesian context could pave the way for tailored interventions and policies to improve waqf literacy, which may have implications for similar contexts elsewhere.
