Abstract

This study described and examined on the current English language learning strategies used by Indonesian Students English Education Department enrolled at State Islamic University of Sultan SyarifKasim Riau in Indonesia. The subjects of the study were (99) male and female students still studying for their Undergraduate degree in English Education Department. The study investigates the frequency of strategies use among these students according to gender and proficiency variables. Proficiency is reflected by students’ learning level (i.e., sophomore, junior, senior), self-reported proficiency in English (i.e., the students’ university average in English courses) and language self-efficacy (i.e,. how good the students perceived themselves as English learners). The collecting data used Questionnaire adopted from Oxford (1990a), Mohammad Amin Embi (1996) danPolitzer (1993), interview lecturers about the language learning strategies used by students. The results of this study showed that State Islamic University of Sultan SyarifKasim, English Education Department used learning strategies with high to medium frequency, and that the highest rank (79.6%) was for Metacognitive strategies while the lowest (63%) was for compensation strategies and the others used cognitive, memory, affective and social. In general, the results showed that gender and proficiency had no significant differences on the use of strategies. Based on these findings, the researcher recommends that more training should be given in using Cognitive, Memory, Affective, social and Compensation strategies by embedding them into regular classroom activities or teaching and learning process

Abstract

One of the aspects that determine the success of learning is learning strategies used. Therefore, teachers should be able to select and use the appropiate strategies to the learning objectives that will be achieved. There are saveral strategies in English can be selected and used by the teachers in learning process to improve the learning achievement of students in four skills of English. Teacher is suggested to use variation strategies that can increase the learning experience for students. Varied leaning strategies can increase the learning outcomes and students’ language skills

Abstract

A spoken language is important to human life, if we would like to have a good speaking, we should have a good speaking skill. However, after observing and conducting inerview an English teacher at MTs Assalam Naga Beralih. In general, students have difficulty at retelling story through picture series, especially in speaking skill such as pronounciation, vocabulary, grammar, fluency and comprehension. The purpose of this study was to determine the significant improvement in students' speaking skills through retelling story using a series of pictures. This research used quantitative research. One Group Pre-Test Post-Test method used in this research. This research was held on October until November 2021 at MTs Assalam Naga Beralih Air Tiris Kampar Regency. The sample consisted of 25 students. Thus, speaking test was used to gather the data. The results showed that the average score of students after being taught to retell stories using a series of pictures (81.20) was higher than before being taught to retell stories using a series of pictures (63.90). Keywords: Retelling Story, Picture Series, Speaking Skills.

Abstract

Vocabulary is one of the important aspects in English  to develop the ability of speaking, listening, reading and writing in learning English. The purpose of this research to examine whether or not there is significant effect of using short stories on students’ vocabulary development at MTs Al-Muttaqin Pekanbaru. The design of this research was quantitative data with the Pre-experimental design. The total of population were 272 students. The data of this research were collected from 34 students with the purposive sampling. The researcher taken one class in this research was class VIII A as experimental group. The technique of collecting data was Pre-test and Post-test design. The data analysis in this research by using statistical method of non parametric Wilcoxon signed rank test. The score analyze using was SPSS 23.0 version.  The result of Wilcoxon test statistics, the value of Asymp. Sig (2-tailed) was 0.000. The result data can be seen  that 0.000<0.05, it can be conclude that the hypothesis is accepted in experimental class used pre-test and post-test. The result of data analysis showed there was significant difference of the students’ vocabulary development before and after being taught using short stories at MTs Al-Muttaqin Pekanbaru.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to describe the students’ perception on micro-teaching and to determine students’ ability in micro-teaching course at sixth semester for students of English education department UIN Suska Riau. This research used quantitative design. The sample of this research were taken by random sampling. The population of this research is sixth semester students at the English education department of UIN Suska Riau. There were 26 students in total as the sample (20% from 126 students). In data collection, researcher used questionnaires and interview to collect data. The result of the research shows that the students’ perception on micro-teaching course is M=4.68 which is classified into very good category with students’ ability in teaching preparation is M=4.36 which is classified into very high level of category, students’ ability in preparation process (making RPP) is M=4.00 which is classified into high level of category, and students’ ability in explaining classified into enough level of category.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to determine whether there is a significant correlation between students’ reading behavior and their reading comprehension at the Eighth Grade of Junior High School Telekomunikasi Pekanbaru. The design of this research is correlational research. There were 21 students as research sample through total sampling. The subject of this research is the eighth grade students at Junior High School Telekomunikasi Pekanbaru. To collect the data, researcher used questionare and test. The technique of analyzing data was using pearson product moment correlatin and it was eased by using SPSS 20.0 program. Based on the data analysis, the researcher concludes that the level of students’ reading behavior in the eighth grade of Junior High School Telekomunikasi Pekanbaru is Excellent Level. The level of students’ reading comprehension in the eighth grade of Junior High School Telekomunikasi Pekanbaru is Good Level. It indicates a sig.value is 0.000. it is less than 0.05 (sig. (2 tailed) <0,05). The result the sig. (2-tailed) is 0.000. It can be concluded that there is a significant correlation between students’ reading behavior and their reading comprehension in the eighth grade of Junior High School Telekomunikasi Pekanbaru.

Abstract

The Purpose of this research to find out whether or not there is significant effect of using Animation Movies on students’ listening skill in narrative text at State Senior High School 3 Pekanbaru. This research was pre-experimental design. The sample of this research was taken by purposive sampling. The population of this research was eleventh grade at Senior High School 3 Pekanbaru. The techniques of collecting data were multiple choice test. The researcher used statistical method of Non parametric Wilcoxon signed rank t-test by using SPSS Version 23 to analyzed the data. Based on data analysis of Wilcoxon formula. The sig value of Asymp. Sig (2-tailed) 0.000. it could be stated that 0.000<0.05, the value of 0.000 is lower than 0.05, it means null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. While the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. So it can be concluded there is a significant difference of students listening skill in narrative text before and after being taught using animation movies.
