Abstract

The inflitration capacity is the soil’s ability to accommodate water that seeps into the soil, reducing surface runoff that will cause flooding, such as in the downstream area of Palopo city. This study aimed to determine the influence of dominant vegetation and soil physical characteristics on infiltration in the upstream area of the Latuppa Sub-Das, Mungkajang District, Palopo city. Data collection was carried out by direct observation in the 2yumnaunanda588@gmail.com field in a purposive manner in 10 plots, which represent the condition of vegetation in the upstream area of the Latuppa watershed, and each plot consisted of 3 replications to observe infiltration and soil samples. The data were analyzed via the rational method, the Horton method, and vegetation index analysis. Additionally, the data were analyzed via simple linear regression and multiple regression analysis to determine the influence of the dominant vegetation and physical characteristics of the soil on the infiltration capacity. The highest infiltration capacity was found in plot 10, with an infiltration capacity of 107.5 mm/minute (6,450 mm/hour) and an average infiltration rate of 0.4 mm/minute (24 mm/hour). The dominant vegetation cover is Cananga odorata, with a vegetation index value of 78.41%. Plot 10 has a height of 362.79 masl, a gentle slope, a crumbly soil structure, a clay sand texture, a very high soil density and 2.10% organic matter. Based on observations and data analysis, the factors that influence the infiltration capacity in the upstream area of the Latuppa subwatershed are vegetation conditions, altitude, slope and physical properties of the soil.

Abstract

This research was conducted in Ponrang Selatan District, Luwu Regency, South Sulawesi from March to September 2024. The population in this study were farmers who received benefits from the Mandiri Benih Activity. The sample in this study was 234 samples. The results of the study showed that the Mandiri Benih Padi program in Ponrang Selatan District began in 2022 and was expanded in 2023 by involving 42 farmer groups in various villages. Although this program has been running and received a positive response from farmers, there are still several aspects that are not optimal, especially in terms of certification of harvest results as seeds. The effectiveness value of 54.96 places the program in the "Quite Effective" category, indicating that this program has provided significant results but has not reached its full potential. Respondents' perceptions of the program before implementation showed quite adequate results, but after the program was implemented, there was an increase in more positive perceptions regarding seed quality, productivity, and the overall agricultural process. This indicates that the Mandiri Benih Padi Activity has had a good impact on farmers, although there is still room for increased effectiveness.

Abstract

A landslide is a natural event characterised by the significant downslope movement of rock and soil masses. This corresponds to the recent landslide that occurred in Bastem, which also resulted in casualties. This study aims to analyse soil and vegetation characteristics in the landslide-affected area of Bonglo Village, Bastem Utara District, Luwu Regency. The research applied a purposive sampling method across nine plots (three in landslide areas and six in vegetated areas). Soil samples were analysed for texture, permeability, bulk density, plasticity, organic matter, and pH, while vegetation was assessed using the Importance Value Index (IVI). Results revealed variations in soil texture, namely sandy loam, loamy sand, clay loam, and sandy clay loam. Permeability was highest in P2 (165.3 cm/hr) and P3 (78.6 cm/hr), and lowest in P5 (0.6 cm/hr). Bulk density ranged from 1.03 g/cm³ (P4) to 1.75 g/cm³ (P2). Soil plasticity varied from highly plastic to slightly plastic. The highest organic matter content was found in P2 (2.06 g/cm³). Soil pH was extremely acidic in P1–P6 (pH 2–3), whereas DA (upper soil), DB (lower soil), and DT (middle soil) were near neutral (pH 6.2–6.8). Vegetation was dominated by Pinus at the tree level (IVI 67.97%) and ferns at the seedling level (IVI 32.44%). These findings emphasise the role of soil physical properties and vegetation in slope stability and highlight the importance of bio-physical-based mitigation strategies in landslide-prone areas.
