Abstract

Education today has given great attention on children and their phsycological state. However, it is hardly given attention that books as the material for teaching in child education play as important role as those for adults. This is more urgent especially when televisions or visualized media have much influence on the children. This certainly leads to the consequence that children today might not manage to develop what the cognitivists call cognitive control-system (see Swaan, 1993, Alberson(1981), Van Dijk and Kintsch(1983). This paper, in general aims at demonstrating that literature program for children today can give more humanistic picture to education or in other words it will treat children education not as mechanistic as before.

Abstract

Due to the last two year Covid-19 Pandemic, the teaching learning activities were globally switched, from offline to online learning. This happened at University of Merdeka Malang, too. One of the researchers, who taught Basic Listening course at Diploma Three English Program, had to change language laboratory activities into synchronous and asynchronous activities. Inevitably, it was resulted in the teaching materials as well. The objective of this RD study is to propose the use of Internet technology through selected videos in the YouTube Channel to partially adjust the existing teaching materials in the above mentioned course. As the primary instruments, the researchers adapted the framework of Graves’ materials development and used questionnaires as the secondary instruments. Graves’ framework consists of seven components of course development processes, however, the researchers did not use or apply them all (only Steps 4, 5 and 6) since they just made partial adjustment to the existing materials usually used during the offline class. The finalproducts of this study were in the form of softcopy files given to the students as handouts.    DOI: 10.26905/enjourme.v7i2.8738

Abstract

This study presents a comparative structural analysis of two renowned poems, “She Walks in Beauty" by G.G. Byron and "The More Loving One" by W.H. Auden, which are widely regarded as some of their finest works. The objective is to identify the similarities and differences between these poems, which originate from distinct poetic eras: Byron’s work represents the Romantic era of the late 18th century, while Auden’s belongs to the Modern era of the early 20th century. To facilitate the comparison, the analysis focuses on three key structural elements of poetry: theme, figures of speech, and imagery. The findings reveal both similarities and differences between the two poems. Shared elements include a focus on love as the central theme, the use of metaphor, personification, and hyperbole in figures of speech, and the incorporation of visual and organic imagery. However, the differences lie in how the theme of love is portrayed. Byron’s poem celebrates the beauty of a woman, while Auden’s reflects the fear of losing a loved one. Additional differences are evident in figures of speech and imagery; Byron employs simile and kinesthetic imagery, which are absent in Auden’s poem. This comparative analysis underscores the influence of distinct poetic eras on these two iconic works’ structural and thematic elements.

Abstract

As a part of linguistics, figurative language is always interesting to study since it is used in daily life as well. For example, it is applied in literary works (i.e., poetry) and music (i.e., songs). The aims of this study are, first, to analyze the use of figurative language in Xavier’s memes and, second, to interpret their meaning. In this study, the researchers chose one of the branches of figurative language, which is called irony, and merely focused on sarcasm as the verbal type of irony. As this is mostly qualitative research, the researchers do library research, including online browsing. This anonymous person called Xavier is often featured in memes, pictures, and videos uploaded by a lot of people at the 9gag platform, a social media website allowing users to upload and share user-generated content, including memes, funny pictures, and videos. It happens that Xavier is popular for his sarcastic comment memes uploaded to 9gag, and they mostly roast or mock others’ content in funny ways. The finding shows that most of Xavier's sarcastic comment memes use propositional, like-prefixed, and lexical sarcasm; for example, (1) Like Tiktokers"—like-prefixed sarcasm and (2) First man to win an argument against a woman"—lexical sarcasm.
