Abstract

Various methods and activities have been undertaken by English teachers to improve the ability of students in English, but the reality shows that a monotonous and tedious method causes students to become passive. This study aims to determine the effect of using the principles of andragogy on the motivation and ability of English speaking students at the Faculty of Law, University of Sawerigading Makassar. The data in this study were obtained through oral tests given in the initial and final tests. The author also uses a questionnaire filled by 25 students from the experimental class. Data obtained from oral tests were then analyzed and interpreted using the SPSS 16 program, while questionnaires were analyzed and interpreted using a Likert scale. The results showed that the treatment given to the experimental class succeeded in improving students' English proficiency. The questionnaire results also show that the average value obtained is 90.16 and can be classified as "very interested". This indicates that the students in the experimental class responded positively to the method used. Keywords: principles of andragogy, student ability, motivation, English.

Abstract

Each learner has different needs in learning, as well as the students at the English Department Sawerigading University Makassar. This study aims at determining the effectiveness of a needs analysis to design a syllabus for the speaking 1 course to enhance the students’ communicative competence. Research and Development Methods (R & D) are used with three systematic steps: input, development, and output. The input step begins with a needs analysis (NA) involving 40 respondents who are chosen purposively. The data are collected through NA questionnaires and they are analyzed descriptively. Development Step is made to formulate the objectives and course targets that are then used to determine the course subject of speaking 1. The output step is done to design lesson plans and prototype of teaching materials. This study has found a teaching material development methodology that has resulted lesson plans and prototypes for a unit of instruction-based resource needs. This methodology can be used by designers or lecturers to develop other English teaching materials in various courses.

Abstract

This study was aiming to analyze the perception of the students on their English teachers’ pedagogical competence who handled the Conversation for Adults Classes at Basic Conversation Level in British English School Makassar. Most of the students at this level still have low English competence and consider that English is difficult. The pedagogic competence of the teachers is related to the success of the learning activities. Therefore, it is required to analyse the teachers’ pedagogic competence based on the students’ perception since this affects to their attitude and actions in learning activities. The population of this study was 100 Adults students of British English School who participated in Basic Conversation Class from January to February 2024. The sample of this study was 50 students taken by using purposive sampling technique. The instrument used in this study is a non-test instrument consisting of 25 items of statements to measure students’ perception on English Teachers’ pedagogical competence. From the data processing, the result of the research was (1) Based on statements, obtained 52% in very good category, 20% in good category, 24% in enough category, 4% in less category, 0% in very less category; (2) Based on indicators, obtained 73.04% good category for learning preparation, 68.35% in good category for presentation of learning materials, 74.8% in good category for learning approach/strategy, 91.87% in very good category for students involvement learning, 70.4% good category for design and do the evaluation and 57.4% in good category for utilize assessment result for quality improvement of learning; (3) overall, the student’s perception on English teachers’ pedagogical competence is 72.64% in good category.
