Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of slant angle (α) on heat transfer enhancement in concentric pipe heat exchanger with forward arrangement of louvered strip insert. In this study, louvered strip insert is varied with α = 15o, 20o and 25o. The working fluid in the inner tube was hot water and in the annulus was cold water, with the flows direction were counterflow. Tests were conducted at a Reynolds number (Re) 5300 – 17,500). At 5300 < Re < 17500 the value of Nui in the inner pipe with the addition of louvered strip insert with α = 15o, 20o and 25o increases in the range of 19.04% - 22.86%, 48.09% - 54.83%, and 67.43% - 77.02% compared with Nui of plain tube respectively. At Re 5300 < Re < 17500 The value of friction factor in the inner pipe with the addition of louvered strip insert with α = 15o, 20o and 25o is 1.52, 2.56 and 3.35 times greater than friction factor of plain tube respectively. Heat transfer enhancement ratio with addition of louvered strip insert with α = 15o, 20o and 25o in the range of 1.00 – 1.06, 1.02 – 1.08 and 1.03 – 1.12 respectively.

Abstract

This research examined the effect of the use of spray humidifier and pad humidifier on the productivity of a desalination unit based heat pump with using humidification and dehumidification process. In spray humidifier there were 5 pieces of sprinklers for spraying sea water. In pad humidifier, sea water was distributed evenly over the top by means of sea water flowing through perforated pipes that have been placed on pad humidifier. Tested the effect of sea water volumetric flow rate, air velocity and sea water temperature which was fed to spray humidifier and pad humidifier on the fresh water production resulted from desalination unit.The research result showed that the production of fresh water increased with the increase in the sea water volumetric flow rate, air velocity, and sea water temperature, this applies to the use of spray humidifier or pad humidifier in the desalination unit.On testing of the effect of the sea water volumetric flow rate, air velocity, and sea water temperature, the performance of spray humidifier and pad humidifier was equal in the production of fresh water, when the ratio of sea water mass flow rate to air mass flow rate of 1.34, 1.3 and 1.3, respectively.Keywords : dehumidification,desalination, humidification, pad humidifier, spray humidifier

Abstract

This research was conducted to investigate the characteristics of heat transfer and pressure drop as well as the thermal performance of diamond pin fin array in the rectangular channel which air was passed through it as coolant fluid. The pin fins were arranged in inline manner. Dimension of base plate in which pin fins attached was 150 mm x 200 mm x 6.5 mm. The average temperature of base plate surface was kept constant at 60oC. Pin fins were made of duralumin having the dimension of  75 mm of height, its sides 12.7 and 12.7 mm respectively, and the distance inter-fin picth in the spanwise direction was kept constant at Sx/D = 2.95. The parameters of this research were Reynolds number (Re) 3,123 – 37,847 based on averaged inlet air velocity and hydraulic diameter, and the distance between the inter-fin pitch in the streamwise direction (Sy/D = 1.97 – 3.94). The research result  shown that increasing Reynolds and decreasing the distance Sy/D increased Nusselt number, that means increased heat transfer rate where it reach maximum at Sy/D = 2.36. The values of pressure drop (DP) and friction factor (f) decreased with increasing Sy/D. The value of the thermal performances (h) varied between 0.77 – 1.22. At Sy/D = 1.97 for Re > 25,000, and Sy/D = 3.94 for all values of Re, the values of h were less than 1, i.e. the used of diamond pin fin would cause an energy loss rather than gain. The net energy gain (h was greater than 1) was only at Sy/D = 1.97 for Re < 18,830, Sy/D = 2.36 for Re < 25,000 and at Sy/D = 2,95 for Re < 3,150. Increasing Reynolds number would decrease the thermal performance (h) for all Sy/D. A net energy gain up to 22% was achieved for Sy/D = 2.36 and Re = 3,123. Keywords: diamond pin fin, Reynolds number, friction factor, thermal performance

Abstract

Pengaruh modifikasi sisipan pita terpilin terhadap karakteristik perpindahan panas, faktor gesekan danunjuk kerja termal di pipa dalam dari penukar kalor pipa konsentrik telah diteliti. Penelitian dilakukan denganmenggunakan tiga modifikasi sisipan pita terpilin yang berbeda, yaitu perforated, notched dan jaggedtwisted tape insert. Classic twisted tape insert juga diteliti untuk perbandingan. Semua pita terpilin yangdigunakan dipilin pada twist pitch konstan sebesar 50,35 mm, bersesuaian dengan twist ratio konstan 4,0.Pengujian dilakukan menggunakan air sebagai fluida uji dengan bilangan Reynolds berkisar antara 4500dan 20.000. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa perpindahan panas dan faktor gesekan dihubungkan dengan semuapita terpilin secara konsisten lebih besar dibandingkan dengan tanpa sisipan pita terpilin (plain tube). Dibawah kondisi operasi yang serupa, bilangan Nusselt, faktor gesekan dan juga unjuk kerja termal yangdiberikan oleh jagged twisted tape lebih besar daripada yang diberikan oleh pita terpilin yang lain. Nilai-nilairata-rata bilangan Nusselt dan faktor gesekan yang diberikan oleh jagged twisted tape berturut-turut 35,42%dan 275% lebih tinggi daripada plain tube, dan 7,76% dan 20% lebih tinggi daripada classic twisted tape.Unjuk kerja termal rata-rata adalah 1,191 didapatkan dengan penggunaan jagged twisted tape insert.
