Abstract

Being able to speak in target language is considered as the indicator thatevery language learner is mastering the target language. Likewise inEnglish, the learners are regarded mastering English when they canproduce the sound of English itself in the form of good communicationtoward the others. Nevertheless, teaching English is a complex process,since it involves some activities started from preparation until evaluation.In addition, there are some barriers regarding teaching speaking, i.e thenumber of students, teacher’s competence, and even students’ problems.Although teaching speaking is a kind of difficult job, still there is a way toovercome some stated problems; group discussion. So, this research isaiming at the implementation of group discussion to improve students’speaking fluency. To achieve the research objectives, the design of theresearch is classroom action research which involves four steps, they areplanning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. The subject research isthe students of Bahasa Indonesia Department semester II of University ofMuhammadiyah Malang who have different English proficiencybackground. Data collection method used is preliminary observation,indepth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation. Thedata gathered will be analyzed by using the qualitative analysis involvingreducing data, displaying data, verifying data and taking conclusion. Basedon the results, it can be stated that the implementation of groupdiscussion in speaking course can improve the students’ speaking fluency.

Abstract

This study investigates the impact of collaborative learning strategy on the reading comprehension of non-English department students at the university level. An effective reading comprehension not only talk about the ability to understanding the text, but also the capacity to interpret meaning and synthesize information from different text genre. Moreover, for the non-English department students who generally have different language competence with English department students, they often encounter a difficult situation in reading activity because of their limitation in language exposure. Using a mixed-method approach, this study combines quantitative data from reading tests with qualitative insights from student interviews and classroom observations. Over one semester, students from various non-English department participated in collaborative activities, such as collaborative strategic reading and group discussions, designed to improve critical thinking and collaborative problem-solving. The quantitative results demonstrate significant improvements in reading comprehension, particularly in identifying main ideas, making inferences, and understanding vocabulary in context. Qualitative findings reveal that students found the collaborative learning environment is enjoyable and motivating, with many reporting that collaborative learning reduced their anxiety and enhanced their willingness to participate actively. This study highlights the effectiveness of collaborative learning strategy in improving reading comprehension among non-English department students and offers practical recommendations for integrating these strategies into diverse academic disciplines.Keywords: Collaborative Learning, Reading Comprehension, EFL, Non-English Department Student

Abstract

This study explores the revitalization of the Kebun Botol Community Reading Park (TBM) in Tlogomas, Malang, aiming to enhance community participation, literacy, foreign language proficiency, and environmental awareness. The objective was to transform TBM into a multifunctional space integrating literacy programs, foreign language education, and environmental conservation. The research applied a Community-Based Participatory Research approach, involving active community engagement throughout the revitalization process. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, surveys, and observational field notes. Results showed a significant increase in community participation, particularly in foreign language classes and environmental workshops. Participants reported improved literacy, with 90% indicating enhanced proficiency in English and Arabic. The integration of environmental conservation activities, such as sustainable farming and recycling workshops, fostered greater ecological awareness. The revitalization process also led to increased satisfaction, with 90% of participants expressing high satisfaction with the new programs and facilities. This study demonstrates the success of integrating foreign language development and environmental education in community spaces. It highlights the importance of participatory approaches in ensuring the sustainability of such initiatives. The findings suggest that TBM Kebun Botol serves as a model for community-driven educational projects, offering valuable lessons for other similar initiatives. Further research should examine the long-term impact and scalability of these revitalization efforts in different contexts.
