Abstract

ABSTRACTThe main objective of this study is to explore students' views on English teaching using authentic materials. This research was conducted in an English class where the students are staffs who are lecturers in a private university in Jakarta. An inductive qualitative research method was employed by interviewing five randomly selected respondents after teaching for 15 weeks. The data from the interview were analyzed in three steps; quotation, coding, and thematic analysis using Atlas.ti. The data analysis results showed that using authentic materials was more interesting and impressive than the ones that were not authentic and not related to the students' subject matter. Using authentic material also increases students' interest in speaking more because the topics discussed are related to students' real world. Besides, this method can increase interest in reading because students are familiar with vocabularies that are related to their majors. However, this method is not suitable for applying in a classroom where students are from different majors.ABSTRAKTujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengeksplorasi pandangan siswa tentang pengajaran bahasa Inggris menggunakan bahan ajar yang otentik.

Abstract

The researcher conducted this research in an English class for staff, where the students were lecturers at a private university in Jakarta. The main objective of this study is to explore students' views on teaching English for Academic Purposes using Authentic Materials. The researcher used a quantitative research by administering a questionnaire after teaching for 15 weeks. The researcher applied a frequency test to identify students' responses in the questionnaire and analyzed them using SPPS. The results of data analysis showed that teaching English for Academic Purposes using authentic materials is more interesting than previous experiences of learning English using teaching materials that are not in accordance with students' subject matter. Besides that, using authentic materials also triggers students to be more active in speaking because they like the topics being discussed, which is related to students' real life. Students' interest in reading also increased because students were familiar with the vocabulary related to their scientific discipline. However, this method is not compatible to be implemented in a class where the students consist of various majors.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find out the impact of the flipped classroom method on students' subject-verb agreement grammar skills. This research was conducted in an English for Specific Purposes (ESP) class of intermediate level where students from the pharmacy major at a private university in Jakarta. The research design was quasi-experimental by dividing the respondents into two groups, namely the control and experimental groups. The experimental group participated in 15 weeks of learning grammar of subject verb agreement using the flipped classroom method, while the control group used the traditional method. The results of the data analysis show that the use of the flipped classroom method can improve students' subject-verb agreement skills. The flip method also increases student motivation because students master the material taught in class by studying it before class begins through an online Learning Management System.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the impact of the pandemic on student performance in Learning English for General Academic Purposes (EGAP) through a comparative analysis of the pandemic and post-pandemic periods, using a Classroom Action Research (CAR) approach. The sudden shift to remote and hybrid learning during the pandemic required a transformation in education, prompting an investigation into its effects on students' English language proficiency. The research was conducted with a diverse sample of students across multiple disciplines. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected, including academic records, language proficiency tests, and observations. Results revealed significant differences in student performance between the two periods, highlighting the pandemic's impact on English learning outcomes. The study also explored various factors influencing these disparities, such as access to technology, learning environments, and adaptability to remote instruction. There is a gap in research on the long-term impact of the pandemic on EGAP performance across disciplines. The novelty of this study is its use of CAR to understand the ongoing effects and adaptive strategies in EGAP education. This research sheds light on the challenges students faced during and after the pandemic, the effectiveness of remote learning methods, and provides insights for educational policymakers and practitioners.
