Abstract

This article describes the roots of cosmopolitanism in Oriental worldview, especially in the Indian and Chinese worldview. The idea of cosmopolitanism is important to understand today. It is seen as an alternative solution for various conflicts with religious and cultural motives as background. Oriental civilizations developed the idea of cosmopolitanism through various philosophical teachings, such as Vedanta and Buddhism. Both of them are inherently meditative and cosmopolitan. They focus on insight on reality as it is, not reality as it is conceptualized by religion, philosophy or science. This insight deconstructs also the normal understanding of self-identity and stimulates the rise of cosmopolitan awareness, which is inherently experiential. Without this experience and awareness, various theoretical reflections on cosmopolitanism will be useless.

Abstract

The crisis of nationalism is one of many social problems faced by Indonesian people today. From the theoretical perspective, the sign of the crisis can be seen in the absence of significant political movement and public will to achieve the ideal of the nation, as it is written in the Indonesian constitution. This paper suggests that the crisis can be overcome if a strong social identity can be constructed based on meaningful collective memory. The analysis is based on the concept of nationalism of Ernst Gellner and Wayne Norman, connected to the thoughts of Maurice Halbwachs. The discussion will end up with its application in Indonesian context.

Abstract

Adam Smith's position as a philosopher of Ethics has been consigned to oblivion due to his more popular thoughts on Economics. This article is an attempt to revisit the ethical side of his thought based on his book The Theory of Moral Sentiment. In this book, Smith made sharp distinction between virtue as morality for noble view, and propriety as moral quality forcommon people. Smith used the concepts of 'virtue' and 'propriety' to analyze human moral behaviour. We can trace this conceptual distinction back to an ancient Greek philosophical school, namely the Stoic Philosophy. This paper will describe the influence of the Stoic Philosophy to Adam Smith MoralPhilosophy.
