Abstract

Despite humans achieve their civilizations in terms of science, philosophy, and technology, they still behave like animal. This is the main argument of Elias Canetti, a Bulgaria-German philosopher, in his magnum opus, namely Crowds and Power. One of animal symptoms of the humans is social conflicts which usually end up in violence, killing, genocide, and other destructive activities. According to Canetti, it occurs because of human nature, namely human abilities to change and combine themselves as masses which have both destructive and creative power. This article discusses the animal nature of human, their ability to change, their tendency to create masses, and relation between masses and power in human life.Keywords: animal nature of human, mass/crowds, power, social conflict

Abstract

This article argues for the importance of philosophical education for elementary school's students in Indonesia. Philosophy can be understood as value education and also life education. Both are very important for the human's personality development. Therefore, ideally, this kind of education should be provided since childhood age. But, philosophy has different teaching method in compare to other sciences. It asks the children to think for themselves and try to find answers for their questions independently. It should not be a burden for children that already have loads of subjects to learn. The program philosophy for children should also bear in mind the existing cultural context that already exists in Indonesian society.

Abstract

Wilhelm von Humboldt has put the foundation of Germany’s educational system. He emphasizes the importance of integrity in term of individual personality. Through education, one can develop one’s integrity and personality. The basis of this integrity is human freedom, that is, the freedom to decide one’s own worldview according to one’s choices in life. With this freedom, human is fashioned through the process of education to develop his/her intellectual knowledge, conscience and skills to work in life. One then can contribute genuinely to the development of one’s neighbourhood and society. However, Humboldt’s theory of education needs some critical remarks as well. Without bold conscience the concept of integrity and personality might be twisted into a justification of self-importance. Germany had its own criticism concerning this arrogance during the World War II. Apart from that, when interpreted and applied critically, Humboldt’s ideas of education may contribute a great deal to the development of educational system as well as philosophy of education in Indonesia.

Abstract

Salah satu sisi negatif dari perkembangan ilmu pengetahuan dan teknologi adalah kehancuran dari alam karena inefisiensi dalam pemakaian energy. Hal ini banyak dialami terutama oleh kota-kota besar seperti Jakarta. Solusinya adalah penggunaan energi yang efisien, dan perencanaan kota yang ramah lingkungan. Tulisan ini mencoba mengungkap kemungkinan penerapan prinsip-prinsip ecocity untuk Jakarta.
