Abstract

Exclusive breastfeeding refers to breastfeeding only and no other food/drink from birth to 6 months of age. Working mothers often fail to provide exclusive breastfeeding. The exclusive breastfeeding coverage rate in the working area of the Kasiyan Health Center is 19.93%, the lowest in Jember Regency. This study was to determine the effect of exposure to information about the inability to provide exclusive breastfeeding with the availability of facilities for mothers who work in the working area of the Kasyan Public Health Center, Jember Regency. This study was included in a quantitative and cross-sectional study on mothers with infants aged 6-12 months who were not exclusively breastfed. The sample size was obtained through purposive sampling technique. The research tool uses a questionnaire. The analysis was performed using a one-sample chi-square statistical test. From the calculation of the analysis results, the p-value of both the availability of facilities and information exposure is 0.000.These results indicate that the availability of facilities and information exposure have a significant effect on the failure of exclusive breastfeeding for working mothers. This proves that the mother has sufficient knowledge about exclusive breastfeeding, but cannot achieve exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months without the support of facilities. In addition to continuous education from health workers, cross-sectoral and cross-program collaboration also needs to be encouraged to increase the success of exclusive breastfeeding among working mothers.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Nutritional problems among children remain a major concern in Indonesia, where mothers play a crucial role in shaping healthy eating habits from an early age. The Responsive Feeding (RF) principle recommended by WHO and UNICEF emphasizes positive interaction and maternal sensitivity to children’s hunger and satiety cues. Popoh Village is among the areas with the highest prevalence of underweight, stunted, and malnourished toddlers in the Wonoayu Health Center region. In 2023, there were still 26 underweight toddlers (9.8%), 12 malnourished children (4.5%), and an increase in the number of stunted toddlers to 13. This community engagement program aimed to enhance the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of mothers of toddlers through cadre empowerment in Popoh Village, Wonoayu District, Sidoarjo Regency. The intervention involved 21 cadres and 20 mothers using an integrated Communication, Information, and Education (CIE) strategy, including educational sessions, simulations, and Small Group Discussions (SGD). The results demonstrated an increase in knowledge by 92% (based on the average post-test score) and improvement in skills by 87%. Furthermore, the activity fostered collective commitment among cadres and mothers to apply responsive feeding practices as a strategy to prevent stunting. Sustained support from healthcare workers is essential to maintain cadre engagement and strengthen the implementation of responsive feeding within families and communities. Keywords: Cadres, Responsive Feeding, Flashcard, Pocket Book.
