Abstract

The ḥadīth on “Prophet Sulaymān Visiting Multiple Wives in A Single Night” has been given as an example of a contradiction between ḥadīth and logic. It tells the story of Prophet Sulaymān sleeping with an enormous number of wives in a single night. Being portrayed as carrying erotic message, the ḥadīth has also been deduced as an example of forgery committed by the ḥadīth scholars themselves. This study aims to clarify the problematic allegations, deduce a number of responses and compare the ideas from significant finding in Jewish and Christian sources. It suggests that such problematic ḥadīth implicitly implying a form of muʿjizāt and karāmah in such tradition. The data provided from the nine canonical ḥadīth books, traditional commentaries (sharh), Biblical sources and related articles. The data analysed in a descriptive and analytical manner using qualitative and quantitative method. The study concludes that the ḥadīth fulfils the criteria of a rigorously authenticated ḥadīth given its inclusion in the canonical works of hadith and corroborated in other tradition and highly established in ḥadīth narrations. Hence, the claim of fabrication was categorically dismissed; the number of wives should be understood in general as indicating numerous wives while, ignoring the particular numbers. The study implicitly shows that the paragraph “single night” alluded to the narrative of muʿjizāt.

Abstract

This paper discusses the emergence and spread of Islam in the Malay Archipelago as articulated and brought forth by Hamka in Sejarah Umat Islam. In his significant analysis of the history of Islam in Malay Archipelago, Hamka established the fact that Islam comes to this region in 7th CE from Arab, and refuted the claims that it was spread later in 13th CE from Gujerat. This was reinforced with significant historical facts that evidently pointed out that Islam had been established in the Malay world early in 7th CE. This paper will analyze Hamka’s thought on the early development of Islam in Malay Archipelago and compared it with the works of Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas in Islam dalam Sejarah dan Kebudayaan Melayu (Islam in Malay History and Culture) that concluded the same thesis.

Abstract

The hadith about “Prophet Solomon slept with his wives (tens/hundreds) in one night” has been presented as one example of the contradiction between hadith and logic. The hadith is described as erotic and concluded as an example of forgery by hadith scholars. This study aims to clarify this accusation, examine some responses and compare ideas from important findings from Jewish and Christian sources. The research data were obtained from nine major hadith books (kutub al-tis'ah), hadith commentaries, Biblical sources, and related articles. The data were analyzed descriptively and analytically using a qualitative approach. This study found that this hadith meets the requirements of a valid hadith because it is found in hadith books and is strengthened by other valid hadiths with meaning. Thus, the accusation of forgery is completely baseless. The number of wives should be understood in general as an indication of the number of wives, not including a specific number. This hadith meaningfully indicates that it speaks of the miracles of Prophet Solomon.
