Abstract

Abstract The transformation of education towards self-managed, digitally-based learning has become an urgent necessity in this era of rapid and complex change. This paper discusses the implementation of the Self Managed Learning (SML) approach at SMP Al Hikmah Boarding School Batu, a boarding school that has fully adopted digital learning systems. SML emphasizes student autonomy in planning, executing, monitoring, and evaluating their own learning processes, with teachers serving as facilitators and motivators. This study focuses on changes in students’ learning patterns, the role of teachers in digital literacy, as well as the challenges and solutions encountered in the implementation of self-managed digital learning. The findings indicate that the use of technology—such as laptops and digital platforms—supports students’ flexibility and access to learning, but also presents challenges such as potential distractions and the need for effective supervision. The SML approach, when implemented in a structured boarding school environment, is considered capable of developing independent learners, provided it is supported by student awareness and optimal teacher control. These findings are expected to serve as a reference for developing self-managed digital learning models in similar educational settings. In addition, this paper highlights the importance of utilizing a Learning and Content Management System (LCMS) as a key tool to facilitate structured and monitored learning. With LCMS, each student is able to learn at their own pace and according to their individual learning styles, while teachers can provide targeted interventions based on students’ specific needs
