Abstract

Abstract

As the Catholic Church’s response to the COVID-19 crisis in Indonesia has changed over time, Yogyakarta—which is under the Archdiocese of Semarang (Keuskupan Agung Semarang, or KAS)—has seen a significant shift in the Church’s approach. During the first pandemic phase (2020), the KAS was more focused on offering short-term assistance, such as distributing face masks, providing food or meals, and organizing other charitable activities. But by the second period of the COVID-19 pandemic (2021), the KAS shifted to more comprehensive approaches, specifically the opening of self-isolation shelters for COVID-19 patients. This article demonstrates how providing shelter has become a new model for the Church to symbolize its deep solidarity with the afflicted in a time of pandemic. The qualitative data collection methods employed include interviews with several key informants, with details corroborated by information from the internet and other mass media.

Abstract

This essay attempts to construct a model of religious education for transformation that effectively addresses the growth of everyday religious conflict in Indonesias post-Suharto era. Using the lens of transformative learning theory, this essay emphasizes that the task of religious education should not merely serve as an intra-ecclesial agency of church or religious maintenance but must retrieve its task to reconstruct and to transform social situations. Such a vision emphasizes the task of religious educators to inform and form people to bring them into the fullness of life for themselves and others to transform the world. This essay draws insights from two scholars in transformative learning theory Jack Mezirow and Paulo Freire who point out two foundations for transformation: (1) critical reflection, and (2) dialogue. These two visions can inspire religious educators to introduce critical reflection in their curriculum and to develop interreligious education that nurtures dialogue and collaboration. By focusing on developing critical reflection and interreligious education, religious education can offer transformation in Indonesian society plagued by ongoing conflict.

Abstract

The implementation of “Religious Moderation” has been the priority of the Indonesian government since its official introduction by the Ministry of Religious Affair in 2019. From Catholic perspective, religious moderation is perceived as the Church’s openness to build culture of engagement indicated by the willingness to build dialogue and collaboration to promote social justice, morality, freedom, and peace. Religious moderation is in line with Pope Francis’ latest encyclic of Fratelli Tutti where all people are called to work together for the common good. Nevertheless, the implementation of religious moderation has raised several questions, particularly on how this vision can be put into practice in school context. Every school has different contexts which needs to be considered in applying religious moderation. Based on this concern, this research wants to focus on the teacher’s implementation of religious moderation in the context of Catholic religious education. The researcher chose religious teachers considering that religious moderation should give deeper impact on the learning process for faith formation. This research also pay attention to Jesuit education. Jesuit education is focused on creating “school of dialogue”, a model of Jesuit education that is centered at Catholic values and traditions, and at the same time, being aware of its position in the midst of religious plurality. This study is qualitative. The data were gathered through questionnaires that contain both closed-ended and open-ended questions. The participants of this study were 17 Catholic religious education teachers from six Jesuit High Schools in Indonesia. The data were gathered first in May to July 2022, but then the researcher continue to elaborate dan deepen the data from November to December 2023.

Abstract

Religious moderation has been envisioned by the Indonesian government since 2019. However, religious moderation has not been implemented successfully, especially in the field of Catholic Religious Education. The purpose of this research is to find out how Catholic religious teachers perceive religious moderation in their teachings. This research paper employs a qualitative design. Data is collected using deep interviews with five Catholic religious teachers from Yogyakarta, Solo, Semarang, and Jakarta. The findings show that most of the informants are aware of the religious moderation proposed by the government. Nevertheless, the informants shared that they were less motivated to implement religious moderation in their Catholic religious education subject because of several reasons, such as, the lack of support from school policy makers, the absence of government trainings or modules related to religious moderation, and the density of the curriculum in schools makes it difficult for teachers to add other material, including religious moderation
