Abstract

Kampung Tanjung Gedong is located at Tanjung Gedong lane. It is situated at the back of the educational area in Grogol, West of Jakarta. This kampung area is surrounded by the city’s facilities, like the University of Tarumanagara, the University of Trisakti, the Sumber Waras Hospital, other residential and commercial areas. In terms of the urban fabric, this kampung is characterized by irregularity and informality. Its streets are varied in size, meandering in shapes and forming a semi-labyrinth environment. Its inhabitants are students, laborers, street vendors, traders, etc. Despite having moderate spatial quality, Kampung Tanjung Gedong requires an improvement to be able to adapt to its context. One of the most effective solutions is to improve the condition by providing its inhabitants with education. Related to architecture, a community engagement project is planned to transfer knowledge by using mapping as training. It is intended to stimulate a better understanding of its inhabitants regarding the potency of the space. The activity includes documentation, both as actualization and archive. The methods are manual and digital mappings, it is a combination of hand and digital sketching by using manual tools and digital instruments. The mapping process is supported by Autodesk cad and camera as the tools. Drawing in this sense is utilized as a media for discussion and presentation. The finding is a cross-checking method, re-examination as a process to re-check existing location against archive and photography. The result is a series of manual, digital, and graphic mappings of kampung Gedong’s surface structureABSTRAK:Kampung Tanjung Gedong terletak di jalan Tanjung Gedong, berlokasi di belakang kawasan pendidikan Grogol Jakarta Barat.

Abstract

As the iconic buildings in Yogyakarta, the Mangunwijaya’s churches contribute a great influence on the city. His wisdom is not only written in his books, but also has been implemented through his architectural projects, revealing a specific composition of a spiritual language. A qualitative study is used to reveal Mangunwijaya’s architectural principles, by using the tracing method to highlight the structural elements of his urban churches. A typological investigation is accompanied by retracing Mangunwijaya’s drawing, where its spatial composition and form are emphasized through points and lines. Hence, by eliminating decorative elements, the most fundamental components of the churches can be raised, consisting: 1) The roof as the most dominant element, a volume that suggests the openness of the building; 2) Landscape defines a mutual symbiosis between indoor and outdoor, stimulating communication and gesture; 3) A typological composition that respects a Roman-Catholic church’s principles while revealing a local identity.

Abstract

The phenomenon of the Indonesian capital relocation has shifted the development focus from Java Island towards the central part of Indonesia. The islands of Kalimantan and Sulawesi are preparing to carry out an entirely new planned city, including the modernization of these two islands, while their current condition is relatively traditional. The problem includes marginalized, threatened, eroded local culture and natural environment as the move would have grave repercussions for the entire region, such as deforestation, global cultural influences, and instantaneous modernization. Conservation and preservation of local architectural DNA have become urgent research; this paper presents a design idea as a study based on two representatives’ local architecture. The research objective is to study the various potency of two tribal houses' typological transformation, they are called Ba’anjung (Kalimantan) and Balla (Sulawesi), as alternative variations to embrace modernized tradition. It aims to promote its genetic structure as the arch-type for present-day development. Typology is utilized to study morphological formations, demonstrating the design process while investigating the two-house types as the case studies. Research steps include 1) Typological study, 2) Module Configuration, and 3) Design transformation. The outcome is a typo-morphological study based on unit design transformation. The novelty is a unit variation of forms Ba’anjung and Balla.
