Abstract

This paper describes the language of the language learners- language learner language - especially the pronunciation of the seventh semester students of the English department, Faculty of Education, Atma Jaya Catholic University Jakarta. Four major sub-topics are discussed in this paper which include the definition of interlanguage, the factors affecting interlanguage, some research findings on interlanguage, the result of observation, and the conclusion and suggestion. On the basis of the theoretical background and the result of the observation, it is concluded that: (1) the inaccurate pronunciation of the English of the learners is a natural one from the point of view of SLA, (2) L2 learning differs from first language acquisition in that it is seldom successful, (3) the incorrect pronunciation of the learners should not be considered as something that is not allowed to occur but should be realized as something natural, and (4) the pronunciation specific of the learners is mostly as a result of overgeneralization of the kind of rules of pronouncing the words.

Abstract

The Communicative Approach of teaching English in senior high school in Indonesia has been adopted since the implementation of The 1984 Curriculum, but the tests–the communicative language tests–(CL Tests) have not been developed and used properly. The objective of the study is to develop CL Tests for senior high school. The procedure of conducting the study consists of three major steps, that is, identifying the objectives, developing the test specification, and developing the CL Tests. The development of the CL Tests in detail consists of fifteen sub-steps from determining what language skills tested, selecting the suitable source materials, up to rewriting the CL Tests to be used as CL Tests alternative for senior high school. The results of the test development reveal that there are fifteen CL Tests consisting of three tests of listening, three reading, three speaking, and three writing tests. The whole tests have construct and content validity, no complete evidence of concurrent validity with report marks and semester test scores, high to very high inter-rater reliability, and no complete practicality.

Three languages – English, Indonesian, and Javanese – are analyzed based on the three concepts. From the analysis it is concluded that in some cases language is universal, but in some other cases every language is specific.

Abstract

It is obvious that learning materials/ teaching materials/ instructional materials are one of the most crucial components for a teacher, including an English teacher, no matter where he/she teaches. “TESOL survey finds teachers spend 7 hours per week searching for instructional materials/resources and another 5 hours per week creating their own instructional materials” (Goldberg, 2017). Several similar topics about materials development have been published elsewhere in different seminar events, textbooks, and journals. They have discussed various literature about materials development such as principles and procedure of materials development (Tomlinson, n.d), guidelines for designing effective English languge teaching materials and factors to consider when designing materials (Howard and Major, n.d), language learning materials development (BİLOKCUOĞLU, 2015), developing learning materials for specific purposes (Harsono, 2007) and some others. However, none of them discussed specificly about developing appropriate EFL learning materials reflecting new contexts and goals. This paper, therefore, will review related literature around materials development, from theories – principles and procedure - to its practice from evaluating, adapting, supplementing and creating own materials, which can match with the new contexts and goals already set before.
