Abstract

This research discusses vocabulary improvement of second year student at Madrasah Tsanawiyah Madani Pao-pao, South Sulawesi, Indonesia using Communicative Language Teaching with Realia. Researchers intend to answer the question "Is the use of Realia in Madrasah Tsanawiyah Madani Pao-pao effective in improving the vocabulary of second-grade students in communicative language teaching (CLT)?" This study aims to understand how CLT and Realia improve the vocabulary of Islamic school students. This study applied a real experimental method of two variables: the independent variable (CLT with Realia) and the dependent variable (vocabulary mastery). In this study, 60 students were randomly selected to participate, 30 in the experimental class and 30 in the control class. This study uses a written vocabulary test as a tool. From the data analysis point of view, the students' vocabulary has improved significantly. It can be seen from the results of the average score of the control category (71.8) and the average score of the control category (63.8). From the research findings and discussions, it can be concluded that the application of CLT and Realia can improve students’ vocabulary in Madrasah Tsanawiyah Madani Pao-pao.

Abstract

This article discusses how the transformation of identity and cultural learning influence the English language learning of Indonesian students during their study program. This article is divided into three different sections of discussions in order to elaborate this issue comprehensively. Firstly, the identity change during the study abroad program is discussed by utilising the concept of identity. Subsequently, the process of identity transformation of Indonesian students during their study abroad is further elaborated through the identity movement theory. Secondly, the process of cultural learning during study abroad program is explained regarding English language learning of Indonesian students. Thirdly, how the students’ identity transformation and cultural learning impact on English language learning is also be analysed. In conclusion, the role of identity transformation and intercultural learning is significant in the enhancement of English language proficiency of the students during the study overseas program. Furthermore, the process of English language learning transforms the students’ identities through the students’ engagement in the new sociocultural condition. The transformation of students’ identity occurs in three steps of identity movement which are molar, molecular and line of flight identity. The transformation also lies in intercultural learning which later develops the students’ intercultural awareness and understanding. That is to say, study overseas can transform the students’ identity and facilitate cultural learning in which both are beneficial in enhancing the English language proficiency of the student. Besides that, study abroad program also constructs difference between individuals who pursue study overseas and who do not.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the benefits and challenges of Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) in the development of students’ speaking ability in Indonesian Secondary School Context. This study used comprehensive literature review from various sources. From the discussion, it is informed that TBLT is useful to increase English speaking competence of students. Firstly, TBLT is applicable to fosters students’ oral fluency. Secondly, TBLT can improves the speaking accuracy of students. Thirdly, TBLT helps students to enhance their speaking confidence. However, several challenges need to be addressed by the English teachers in order to use TBLT effectively. The finding of this study provides valuable literature for English teachers in Indonesia regarding the use (benefits and challenges) of TBLT to teach speaking skill.

Abstract

Politeness strategies are used to craft messages that save the listener's positive and negative face when face-threatening behavior is inevitable or desired. Brown and Levinson mainly outline his four types of politeness strategies. Do not use baldness, negative politeness, positive politeness, off the record (indirect), and simply face-threatening behavior. Positive politeness strategies try to minimize threats to the listener's positive face and make the listener feel good. Negative politeness strategies are based on avoidance and assume that the speaker is imposing something on the listener. Off-the-record strategies use indirect speech to deprive the speaker of the possibility of imposing themselves on the listener. Discourse analysis is conducted to analyze the "face-threatening acts" (FTA) in some conversations of The Danish Girl Movie(2015). Positive politeness or negative politeness is adopted to examine how to speaking between man and a beautiful girl respectively in unconventional ways, which enable them to develop friendship thanks to the politeness strategies used positive politeness and negative politeness. The "meaning of language use" in the politeness strategies is explored. The analysis of politeness in action in this film uncovers both the informational and affective dimensions of language use in structuring human relationship and friendship. Data were analyzed using the content analysis method. In this paper, used a purposive sampling technique. With this technique, only utterances with positive and negative politeness strategies were selected for inclusion in this paper. A descriptive qualitative research technique was used to analyze the data. Guidance maps were used to identify positive and negative politeness strategies. The study found that use positive and negative politeness strategies to mitigate threats. It also helps interlocutors understand the strategies they can use to communicate effectively, ensuring both sides feel valued in the conversation.
