<![CDATA[ABSTRACTCoconut is a versatile plant in life. Almost all of its parts are beneficial to humans. Coconut is also a strategic commodity that has a socio-cultural role in people's lives. The purpose of this study, namely to determine the extent of the role of coconut in the social cultural life of the Selayar Island’s local people. The research method used is qualitative descriptive type, the fact-based on the field research. The method is divided into two working steps namely data collection and data processing. The results of this study indicate that the role of coconut is very big to the life of the local people in Selayar Island. The role of coconut is seen in the fulfillment of daily needs, either as a source of livelihood, food, medicine, dowry and traditional ceremonies. The role of the coconut contains the value of cultural values in the form of values of trust, moral values, aesthetics, sacred, and education. The value of this cultural value has colored all aspects of the life of the Selayar Islands community. ABSTRAKKelapa merupakan tanaman serbaguna dalam kehidupan. Hampir seluruh bagiannya bermanfaat bagi manusia. Kelapa juga merupakan komoditas strategis yang memiliki peran sosial budaya dalam kehidupan masyarakat. Tujuan dari penelitian ini, yaitu untuk mengetahui sejauh mana peran kelapa dalam kehidupan sosial budaya masyarakat Kepulauan Selayar. Metode penelitian yang digunakan termasuk jenis deskriptif kualitatif, yaitu penelitian berdasarkan fakta yang ada di lapangan. Metode tersebut dibagi atas dua langkah kerja yaitu pengumpulan data dan pengolahan data. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa peran kelapa sangat besar terhadap kehidupan masyarakat Kabupaten Kepulauan Selayar. Peran kelapa terlihat dalam pemenuhan kebutuhan sehari hari, baik sebagai sumber mata pencaharian, makanan, pengobatan, mas kawin atau mahar dan upacara adat. Peranan kelapa tersebut mengandung nilai nilai budaya yang berupa nilai kepercayaan, nilai moral, estetis, sakral, dan pendidikan. Nilai nilai budaya ini telah mewarnai segala aspek kehidupan masyarakat Kepulauan Selayar.]]>
