Abstract

To speak of bonum commune from the standpoint of the tradition of the In- donesian Catholic Church, this paper does not emphasize the theories of thinkers or their leaders. The priority is precisely the “struggle practices” of the Catholics seeking “conditions of inner and outer well-being” for each individual citizen and community groups in the life of the Indonesian nation. From there it is hoped that the relevance of the idea of bonum commune can be found and its significance for living together. At the pragmatic level, the benchmarks are of course the fruits for the Indonesian people. Normatively, ideologically, the measure is its compatibility with the principles of nation and state, namely Pancasila and Bhinneka Tung- gal Ika. In order for the discussion to be on its track to understand the bonum commune according to Church doctrine, a few items of understanding from the Church's official sources were previously presented. This study was directed at the first period of the Catholic Party's journey, covering the period from its establishment until the recognition of the sovereignty of the Republic of Indonesia by the Dutch Government on December 27, 1949. The recognition it self was the final result of the Round Table Conference (Ronde Tafel Conferentie), namely a meeting between the Netherlands and Indonesia in The Hague, the Netherlands on August 23 to November 2, 1949. The two periods after that, namely the period of liberal democracy and guided democracy as well as the initial period of the New Order to fusion into the Indonesian Democratic Party, are expected to be discussed in other opportunities . Keywords: Catholic, Indonesia, Bonum Commue

Abstract

The First Pastoral Consultation of the Diocese of Surabaya held on November 26th-28th 2009 proposed The Basic Direction of the Diocese of Surabaya 2010-2019, which is stating the desire of the Church of the Diocese of Surabaya to be“a communion of Christ’s disciples, which is more and more maturing in faith, convivial, full of service and missionary”. The Second Pastoral Consultation held on October 18th-20th 2019, keeping this purpose statement for the next 10 years inThe Basic Direction of the Diocese of Surabaya 2020-2030, thus confirms the significancy of an “Ecclesiology of Discipleship” for the formation of the people of the Diocese. This paper wants to propose a study regarding this ecclesiology based on the document of the Second Vatican Council, i.e. The Pastoral Constitution Gaudium et Spes, art. 1. Being a Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the modern world, Gaudium et Spes, opened with a statement regarding the unity of the followers of Christ and the men of this age, would be fundamentally authoritative and enlightening for reflecting the vocation of the local Church of Surabaya as “a communion of the disciples of Christ” to become aware of her mission for the world (ad extradimension), while she is, as a communion of the faith (ad intra dimension), journeyingtowards eternal unity with the God

Abstract

Sacrament of Penance is of great importance for the formation of the faithful in their path to holiness after Baptism. This Sacrament is intended as an instrument for theircontinual cleansing and sanctification as the disciples of Christ, so that they can bear many fruits in their life. This work of sanctification is a key element in their Christian life due to the power of sins which defiles them as the members of Christ. This paper wants to explore the meaning of the Sacrament of Penance in the work of sanctification of the faithful from the liturgical document Ordo Paenitentiae (1973) and the subsequent documents on it. At the end of the discussion, it wants to bring some pastoral consequences related to the practice of this Sacrament in the context of the life of the faithful in the Diocese of Surabaya.

Abstract

The Second Pastoral Consultation of the Diocese of Surabaya held on October 18th-20th 2019 declared the Pastoral Strategic Policy of the Diocese of Surabaya for 2020-2030, formulated in these words: “In the spirit of the Basic Direction, the Catholic Church of the Diocese of Surabaya matures lingkungan rooted parishes present in the middle of the society”. This article wants to know in what matters and how strong this Diocese of Surabaya’s Pastoral Strategic Policy is connected to the voices of the pastors of the universal Church, especially those echoed in the doctrine of the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) and that of the subsequent period. It is hoped that such reflection brought a clearer vision and understanding regarding such an important policy, granted that it will lead the faithful people of the Catholic Church of the Diocese of Surabaya in their pilgrimage to God in this world for the next 10 years. By knowing its connectedness with the voices of the pastors of the universal Church, it is expected that the faithful people of the Diocese of Surabaya would be more aware of the voice of Jesus Christ, the Good Pastor, who himself leads his flock to the green pastures of love shared in faith and hope with peoples they enconter.

Abstract

Plantatio Ecclesiae is a particular term elaborated in missiology in the first half of the 20th century, and then used by the Vatican Council II in the decree on the mission activity of the Church Ad Gentes (1965) to designate the definition of mission and its goal, as well. From this perspective, it is believed that mission is not merely a question about converting souls and, therefore, bringing them to eternal salvation, but especially a “plantation of the Church” in the lands not yet touched by christian faith. Thus, mission is not only about individual salvation, but particularly about the formation of new christian communities comprised of indigenous people with their own hierarchical leaders, who live their own native values and culture contributing themselves for the local development and the good of their own society, enlightened by christian faith and strengthened by christian love. Being used to determine the ideal of a missionary parish in the Basic Orientation (Arah Dasar) of the Diocese of Surabaya 2020-2030, this term is important to be studied. This study tries to learn how the ideal of a missionary parish, seen from the perspective of plantatio Ecclesiae theology, could be realized by the Catholic Church of the Diocese of Surabaya in the years to come.

Abstract

This article deals with some elements of pastoral works and care of souls in the Diocese of Surabaya, in the East Java, Indonesia, especially in the mission era of 1850-1942. This period, which ends with the defeat of the colonial power of the Dutch by the Japanese occupation forces, is of great importance, because it laid the foundation of the community life of this Diocese for the next periods. Being still in the period of mission, pastoral works of caring the souls of those days were characterized by the atmosphere of mission works. While as a term “mission” was still a “keyword” of this period, it is hoped that a good understanding about this period could be a good introduction for the future study of the history of pastoral works in the Diocese of Surabaya.

Abstract

This article wants to discuss the social teaching of Pope John Paul II regarding the conflict between work and capital in his encyclical Laborem Exercens. Karl Marx (1818-1883) holds that in an capitalistic industrial world, work is represented by the worker class as work force, while capital is represented by the entrepeneurs, owners or holders of the means of production. In Laborem Exercens art. 11-15, the Pope mentions this issue of the relationship of work and capital from the perspective of Christian personalism, proposing the principle of the priority of work over capital as the basis for regulating work in general and industry in particular. From this study, it is hoped that several consequences can be drawn for studies and efforts about work that are based on a personalistic vision of man

Abstract

The formulation of the Christian faith regarding the divinity of the person of Jesus Christ is based on the kerygma of the New Testament, which clearly proclaims his preexistence, his exaltation as the Lord after his resurrection, and his parousia. Entering into the new ambience of the hellenistic culture under the Roman Empire, this faith, rooted in a jewish soil, had to be formulated in a theological language to keep it from any speculative distortion. This effort ended in the Council of Chalcedon in 451, but with some schismatic problems as regards the position of the Egyptian, Armenian and Syriac Churches. This paper wants to examine the history of this formulation in the past, and the ecumenical dialogue after the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) between the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Churches, and also with the above Churches, regarding this fundamental faith on the same Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Abstract

The Eucharist, which we celebrate today, has various aspects of spiritual richness worth to study. For an in-depth study on the Eucharist, the historical-biblical approach would be helpful, since such an approach would hopefully reveal its essential dimensions seen from a Christian perspective, namely, as a sign of grace which confers the grace it signifies. This study, using such a historical-biblical approach, tends to reveals the essential dimensions of the Eucharist starting precisely from its origin, namely, Jesus’ Last Supper arranged before his passion, death and burial. Rooted deeply in Jewish tradition, it shows its proper character as a Christian rite of salvation having Jesus’ sacrificial self-giving as its essential novelty.
