Abstract

The formulation of the Christian faith regarding the divinity of the person of Jesus Christ is based on the kerygma of the New Testament, which clearly proclaims his preexistence, his exaltation as the Lord after his resurrection, and his parousia. Entering into the new ambience of the hellenistic culture under the Roman Empire, this faith, rooted in a jewish soil, had to be formulated in a theological language to keep it from any speculative distortion. This effort ended in the Council of Chalcedon in 451, but with some schismatic problems as regards the position of the Egyptian, Armenian and Syriac Churches. This paper wants to examine the history of this formulation in the past, and the ecumenical dialogue after the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) between the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Churches, and also with the above Churches, regarding this fundamental faith on the same Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Abstract

The Eucharist, which we celebrate today, has various aspects of spiritual richness worth to study. For an in-depth study on the Eucharist, the historical-biblical approach would be helpful, since such an approach would hopefully reveal its essential dimensions seen from a Christian perspective, namely, as a sign of grace which confers the grace it signifies. This study, using such a historical-biblical approach, tends to reveals the essential dimensions of the Eucharist starting precisely from its origin, namely, Jesus’ Last Supper arranged before his passion, death and burial. Rooted deeply in Jewish tradition, it shows its proper character as a Christian rite of salvation having Jesus’ sacrificial self-giving as its essential novelty.

Abstract

Homilies on the Song of Songs, a christocentric work by St. Gregory of Nyssa, is very special for its richness seen from the perspective of the Christian doctrine in spirituality. Treating the christian soul as the bride and Christ as the Bridegroom, it reveals the way for the soul to arrive in the spousal union with God. While this book is very christocentric, this study wants to investigate its pneumatological elements. It is supposed that a spiritual union with Christ should be a trinitarian one and, thus, pneumatological one, as well. Such a supposition is affirmed by the fact that the writer of this hermeneutical work on the sapiential literature is a leading Father in the affirmation of the doctrine of the Trinity in the Patristic Era.

Abstract

This article is aimed to discuss the rejection of the primacy of the Father in the doctrinal structure of the Trinity emerging in contemporary theology and tries to defend the necessity of a balanced reflection regarding the unity and the plurality of the above doctrine. The teaching of the Fathers of the Church, particularly formulated in the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed and held in the Latin Tradition regarding the primacy of the Father as well as the origin of the Son (“begotten, not made; consubstantial with the Father”) and of the Holy Spirit (“who proceeds from the Father and the Son”), as depositum fidei needs to be well conserved. Precisely expressing more maturely and more completely, the mystery of God revealed through the message of Jesus Christ and reflected by the Church following the teaching of the Apostles, this profession of faith is still an expression of authentic faith in God of Jesus Christ.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Unity, holiness, catholicity and apostolicity, or in Latin known as Notae Ecclesiae, are formulations of faith regarding the Church, confirming her essential attributes that make the Church the Church. In history, these attributes have made their contributions for the teaching of faith, for the apologetical tasks and, lately, as principles and criteria in doing Catholic theology. Thus, evidently, presenting the Church’s mysteries in their essential aspects, these notae have flexibility to be used as theological instruments in dogmatics, catechesis, apologetics, and even in theological methodology. Seeing these facts, it is hoped that dealing with these marks of the Church there are inspirations for further development for theology and also for the life of the Church.

Abstract

This article wants to explore the historical and doctrinal basis for the practice of praying through the intercession of saints, which is commonly found in the Catholic Church. For that purpose, it will study the historical context of its origin and its doctrinal basis originating from the documents of councils. From the study of these sources, it is hoped that we can find the authentic spirit behind the practice of supplicating prayer through the intercession of saints. It is also hoped that, with a proper understanding of its history in the Church and the Church teaching on it, abuse can be avoided, and correct practice found support. For this reason, the discussion will be maintained by a study on the historical context of the practice and of the development of the doctrine found in the Magisterium of the councils. Yet the general theological framework of the Second Vatican Council will be presented first, so that the theological vision of the theme in the modern era could be placed as our basic understanding. But as it is also necessary to present the historical background of this practice, the discussion should also be supplied with this historical background. With this background, it is hoped that the idea of the teachings outlined by the councils, from the beginning up to the Second Vatican Council, can be better understood.

Abstract

With its vast scope, the Diocese of Surabaya is divided into 46 parishes grouped in 8 vicariates. In recent pastoral situations, strengthening the vicariate is a priority, but conceptually there has never been any adequate study on this topic. To make an adequate study, this work covers the history of the former residencies of Surabaya, Kediri, Madiun, dan Rembang because in reality the Diocese of Surabaya would later use this colonial administrative basis of the regional government as the basis for dividing its territory into vicariates. Having that rationale, this paper then discusses the formation history of the Diocese of Surabaya and the formation of the vicariates in the territory of the Diocese based on the ex-residencies’ territorial administration. After making an analysis on the divisions of the Diocese into vicariates since 1983 this paper ends with a conclusion.

Abstract

The Diocese of Surabaya has experienced significant growth in the number of parishes; however, this expansion has also produced structural imbalances. The development of local units (parishes) has not been accompanied by a corresponding strengthening of intermediate structures (episcopal vicariates). This study addresses the issue of the "missing vicariates" (kevikepan yang hilang) marked by weak institutional functions and the limited leadership role of the Episcopal Vicar, who lacks a clear job description and strategic direction. As a result, a "silo mentality" and parochialism threaten the Church’s fundamental vision as communion. Employing a literature review as the methodological approach, this paper proposes a "Strengthening Model for Territorial Vicariates" for the period 2026–2030, aligned with the stages of the Diocese's Basic Directions (ARDAS). The framework integrates John Kotter's 8-Steps Change Model and Kurt Lewin’s 3-Phases Change Model with contemporary leadership theories: transformational, servant, authentic, and leader-member exchange (LMX). The strengthening process is structured into three phases: (1) creating a climate for change, (2) involving and empowering the entire vicariate, and (3) implementing and consolidating the culture. These phases must be accompanied by a transformation of the Episcopal Vicar’s role into that of a strategic leader and by the establishment of a solid steering coalition. In this way, vicariates can become coordinating centers that foster synodality, subsidiarity, and solidarity, ensuring the Diocese of Surabaya advances as a cohesive and missionary community.
