Abstract

This research is a type of library research, trying to explain al-Attas’ conception of man and education. The results of the study found that: (1) man is not a creature that evolved from animals, and therefore "al-ḥayawān" in the definition of man as: al-ḥayawān al-nāṭiq cannot be translated as “animals,” but a “living being”, so man, if it is constructed, is defined as a living being who is rational or who can speak (i.e., a living being that speaks); (2) the nature of man consists of two dimensions: body and soul (3) ‘ilm farḍ‘ ain is a nutrient for the dimensions of man’s soul, while ‘ilm farḍ kifāyah is nutrition for the dimensions of the body. These two types of knowledge are like boats by which man can achieve educational goals while at the same time delivering the goals and functions of his life (i.e., ‘ibādullah and khalīfatullāh) on earth.

Abstract

This research is exposing al-Attas’ program of Islamization of Knowledge, focusing on the frame work of the Islamization of knowledge and its implementation in the education curriculum. Using the library research method, this research succeeded in compiling a number of Islamic frame works and steps for their implementation. Among the work frames are: (1) identifying, (2) isolating, (3) formulating, (4) integrating, and (5) spreading. Identifying is finding secular elements and traditions that are not of Islamic value in the body of knowledge, and then isolating them by freeing the body of knowledge from secular elements and un-Islamic values found embedded in the body of knowledge. Being formulating is the activity of compiling key concepts and Islamic values. The formulation is then integrated into the core knowledge which will be deployed in the Islamic education curriculum.

Abstract

In Islam, knowledge is said to be true and real knowledge if it is useful (yantafi‘u) that is measured when someone knows (‘arafa) himself with whom someone knows God and his destiny. This research is an exposition of the nature of knowledge in the perspective of al-Attas. Using the library research method, this research found that ma'na (meaning), as stated in the definition of knoeledge (حصول معنى الش يئ فى النفس ) means: (1) to put everything in its rightful portion and position, (2) everything is a symbol that refers to and point to something other than itself, ie, God, and (3) the condition of things constantly in a state of “recreation” and “annihilation” i.e., from being to nothing, then becoming again and so on.

Abstract

The controversy surrounding waḥdat al-wujūd vs waḥdat al-syuhūd is still considered to be perennial, especially in the ṣūfī circle. This study is an exposition of the seven degree of existences (marātib al-wujūd) from the perspective of al-Makassarī. Using the literature study, this research succeeded in structuring the dignity wujūd as follows: first Dhāt al-Ḥaq, second al-Waḥdah, third al-Wāḥidiyyah, fourth al-Arwaḥ, fifth al-Mitsal, sixth al-Syahādah, and seventh al-Insān al-Kāmil.
