Abstract

Abstract

The family plays a crucial role in determining a child’s health status; however, optimizing care at the family level remains a challenge. During toddlerhood, rapid development is often accompanied by limited emotional regulation, which may trigger temper tantrums that can develop into behavioral problems if not addressed with appropriate parenting practices. Current child health issues indicate a high incidence of temper tantrums associated with parenting patterns, suboptimal exclusive breastfeeding practices, and incomplete basic immunization, all of which may affect overall child growth, development, and health status. This final scientific paper aimed to describe the implementation of family nursing care for a toddler using a family health tasks approach. The method used was a case study conducted in a family in Lam Gawee Village, Darussalam Sub-district, Aceh Besar, from December 17 to 26, 2025. Based on the assessment findings, the nursing diagnoses established were ineffective family coping related to temper tantrum behavior in toddlers, ineffective health maintenance behavior related to exclusive breastfeeding, and ineffective family self-health management related to immunization. Interventions focused on implementing the five family health tasks, including education on the concept and causes of temper tantrums and demonstration of management techniques during tantrum episodes. Evaluation results showed that family nursing care was effective in improving caregiver independence in managing temper tantrums, lactation management, and immunization adherence through the five-family health tasks approach. It is recommended that community nurses increase the frequency of home visits and provide anticipatory guidance to families on child-rearing practices, managing temper tantrums, and ensuring children’s health needs are met through exclusive breastfeeding and complete immunization.

Abstract

Inappropriate complementary feeding practices in terms of timely initiation, portion size, feeding frequency, food variety, and texture may affect infants’ nutritional status and increase the risk of health problems. This study aimed to describe maternal behavior in complementary feeding among infants aged 6–24 months. A descriptive quantitative study design was employed using proportional sampling, involving 201 mothers in the working area of Public Health Center, Banda Aceh City. Data were collected using a complementary feeding behavior questionnaire that had been tested for validity and reliability and were analyzed using univariate analysis. The results showed that the majority of mothers (69.2%) demonstrated inappropriate complementary feeding practices. Most complementary feeding was initiated before the age of six months, with inadequate food variety and inappropriate texture for the infants’ age, as well as suboptimal portion size and feeding frequency. These findings indicate that complementary feeding practices among infants remain inconsistent with recommended guidelines. Therefore, strengthening educational interventions for mothers regarding appropriate complementary feeding principles is necessary to support optimal growth and prevent the risk of undernutrition in infants. Health workers are expected to enhance nutrition education and routinely monitor infants’ nutritional status, while families are encouraged to actively support complementary feeding practices that adhere to appropriate timing, portion size, frequency, variety, and texture to promote optimal infant growth and development.

Abstract

Stunting and speech delay are health problems in toddlers that influence physical growth, cognitive development, and communication abilities. Inadequate management may negatively impact children’s long-term growth and development. The family plays a crucial role in prevention and management through adequate nutrition, developmental stimulation, and utilization of healthcare services. This final scientific paper aimed to describe the implementation of family nursing care for a toddler with stunting and speech delay. Based on the assessment conducted from December 30, 2025, to January 1, 2026, two priority nursing diagnoses were identified: inadequate nutritional intake (stunting) and delayed child development (speech delay). The interventions were designed on the five family health tasks. For the first diagnosis, the actions implemented included education on balanced nutrition using the ‘My Plate’ approach, demonstration of healthy menu planning, modification of the eating environment, and utilization of healthcare services. Interventions implemented for the second diagnosis included education on the importance of speech development stimulation, demonstration of language stimulation using flashcards and bibliotherapy, limitation of gadget use, and family assistance in decision-making regarding care and in the independent implementation of language stimulation at home. Evaluation results indicated improvements in the family’s knowledge, attitudes, skills, and self-confidence in caring for the child, as well as in fulfilling family health tasks. Community health centers are expected to enhance educational programs and family support initiatives to optimize child growth and development.
