Abstract

The nano-TiO2 photocatalysts doped with Iron and Niobium for dye wastewater treatment were prepared by temperature-controlled sol-gel method. The effects of these dopants on the physical and chemical properties of TiO2 were compared with the commercially available Degussa TiO2 P25. Among these characteristics are crystalline size, the presence of absolute anatase phase, band gap energy and specific surface area. The characterization data were correlated to photocatalytic activities using Turquoise blue dye (TBD) as model pollutant. Single doping (with Nb) and co-doping (Fe and Nb) catalyst reached complete decolorization within 2.5 hours and 3 hours. In addition, their kinetic reaction rate constants of apparent first-order model are 0.0258 min-1 and 0.0225 min-1, respectively. The presence of Nb as traps is considered to play a crucial key in enhancing the photocatalytic activity.

Abstract

Catalytic performance and characterization of Ni/CeO2/ZrO2 and commercial catalyst from Indonesia were investigated in steam reforming of methane. Ni/CeO2/ZrO2 catalyst was prepared using co-impregnation of cerium nitrate and nickel nitrate onto zirconia support material. BET, SEM, EDS, XRD, TPD, TG, and ICP analyses were employed for the characterization of the catalysts. Remarkable catalytic performance of Ni/CeO2/ZrO2 catalyst at 600oC operating temperature and atmospheric pressure of about 74.9% methane conversion was obtained compared to 55.9% using the commercial catalyst. In addition, the presence of cerium in Ni/CeO2/ZrO2 was effective in improving the stability and resistance to coke formation. Less carbon formation was confirmed from the thermo-gravimetric analysis. These results showed that the prepared catalyst is promising in the industrial application which can be used at lower operation temperature for energy saving.

Abstract

The Batik dyeing method, producing famous fabric products recognized locally and internationally, requires lots of wax and dyes in the dyeing process. The wastewater containing high loads of organic pollutants requires proper treatment to prevent environmental damage. Among many technologies developed for wastewater treatment, combining ozonation and UV irradiation has been a promising method due to its effectiveness in degrading and reducing the organic pollutants in wastewater. In this study, Batik wastewater was treated using commercially available ozone generators and UV lamps in a combined ozone/UV system to confirm the effectiveness and to propose a simple and economically feasible method for Batik wastewater treatment. The color and the suspended solids in the wastewater were reduced significantly after 48-hour treatment using the setup in this study. A simple simulation of the investment and operational costs was also conducted.
