Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of Taboo Word Game strategy on students vocabulary ability. The purpose of the study was to find out the effect of Taboo Word Game strategy had effect on students’ vocabulary ability. The study used research by doing experimental design. The population of this study was 60 Informatics Engineering students of Potensi Utama University in the fourth semester of 2019-2020 Academic Year. A placement test was given to 60 students. 60 students were taken as the sample of this research. The sample was divided into two groups: the first group is the Taboo Word Game group (30 students) and the second group is conventional group (30 students). The instrument of collecting the data was vocabulary test. The writer used independent sample t test formula to analyse the data. The data were calculate by using independent sample t test by SPSS 20 for windows. The result of the analysis shows that tcount > ttable = 3,941 < 2,66329 is higher at the level of significance 0.05 and the degree of freedom (df) 58. Therefore, the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted.

Abstract

Regarding the worldwide use of virtual applications in the EFL teaching and learning process, there were a lot of obstacles and limitations. In developed countries as the USA, Europe, etc, they were able to manage how to use virtual application very successfully in teaching and learning process.   Even though, the improvement of using each virtual application still needs more researches for specific applications’ effect.  In this research, the writer used the zoom application as a tool to examine the effect on students speaking ability. The research consisted of 20 English students at Potensi Utama University. They were  tested to know theirs speaking ability in scores and taught speaking material through zoom application. The zoom application was used in teaching the students of the third  semester of the academic year (2020-2021). Data were collected from the study participants using an oral speaking test, an attitudinal questionnaire, and Semi-structured interviews. The results indicated that there was a significant improvement of students after studying using the zoom application. The progress of speaking ability is significantly found in fluency, pronunciation, grammar, comprehension, and vocabulary due to the virtual classes. However, using the zoom application could satisfy the lecturer and students.  It showed the average scores of the Pre-Test were 49,1, Post Test-1 was 69,2 and Post-Test II was 90,7.  There were a significant improvement from Pre to Post Test I and a higher figure at Post Test II. The questionnaire and interview findings also revealed that students generally had positive attitudes towards using zoom application as virtual classes particularly because they found it helpful and efficient in improving their speaking ability. In those findings, the researcher suggested using zoom application could be a favorite teaching method in the mids of the pandemic to increase students’ speaking ability. Abstract

Nowadays, there has been great attention to studying the students writing ability as Foreign Language learners, especially the essay writing skills of non-native speaker students. The purpose of this study is to analyze the types of errors in using the linking words and phrases. The writer is focused in analyzing student examination results in essays term at medium-level academic writing course and state the main causes of these errors. The research method is a classroom research study. This research is based on Ngadda and Nwoke’s (2014) theories on the classification of errors and Biber et al.’s (2002) classification of linking adverbials as well as presents the frequency of the types of errors. The research object is students of Potensi Utama University at English Education program students in the fifth semester of the 2021-2022 Academic Year. The main findings of the research indicate that linking words were seldom applied in writing because students' comprehension was very low. The teaching and learning process in exploring linking words certainly raised the level of students in mastering linking words in writing. The research consisted of 32 English students at Potensi Utama University. They were tested to know their writing ability in the capability of using linking words. The results indicated that there was a significant improvement in students’ writing ability after learning to link words comprehensively. The students were able to use and place the linking words correctly.  The writer found that the students were able to manage linking words at Pre-Test was 9,38% and raise to 90,63% at Post-Test. Certainly, it is important to master the linking words to improve students’ ability in writing skills.
