Abstract

The low problem solving ability possessed by students is the background of this research. This study aims to test the positive effect of the problem-based learning model on the problem-solving skills of fourth-grade students at State Elementary School Mojoduwur II. This study used the quasi-experimental method and a pretest-posttest control group design. The sample was 50 students determined with cluster random sampling. Data were collected using a problem-solving skill test with 5 post-test questions and 5 pre-test questions. The hypothesis was tested using a t-test. The results showed that there was a positive effect of the use of the problem-based learning model on the student’s problem-solving skills with a significance value of <0.05 so that Ha is accepted. In addition, the results of the study also showed that students in the experimental class experienced a greater average increase when compared to the control class.

Abstract

Mastering problem-solving skills is important for students in the 21st century. The RME approach can be an alternative to improve students' problem-solving skills. This study aims to determine the effect of the RME approach on students' problem-solving skills. This study used a one-group pre-test post-test design. It involved 30 students of class III at State Elementary School Jombatan 3. Data were collected by pre-test and post-test of problem-solving skills. The results of the descriptive analysis show an increase in the average problem-solving skills score of 29.8 after the use of the RME approach in learning. Data were analyzed using a t-test. The t-test obtains a significance level of 0.000 <0.05 meaning that  is rejected and is accepted. Thus, there is a difference in the mean score of problem-solving skills before and after the use of the RME approach in learning. This proves that students' problem-solving skills increase after the use of the RME approach in learning. The application of the RME approach can improve one’s higher order thingking skills.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the education sector. This can be seen in the shift in the education system from offline to online learning at all levels of education. Elementary schools are one of the educational institutions that implement the online learning system. Indeed, this affects the student's learning interests as they are required to learn from home. This study used the qualitative description method. This study aims to identify the student's learning interests during the implementation of online learning. The results of the study showed that the students tended to have lower learning interests during the pandemic. This condition was influenced by boredom and a lack of monitoring from teachers and parents during the learning process.
