Abstract

The expressions of Sufi spiritual experience are often shown on verbal media (Sufi language) such as poetry or simple expressions, etc. Reading the expressions requires careful reading so that the esoteric meaning can be captured. The purpose of this article is to read the writing of the walls in the at-taqy Islamic boarding school. To be able to do this reading, the semiotic method is used. Similar research has been carried out, but what makes this study unique is that the writing of the wall is a living sufism at the At-Taqy Islamic Boarding School. The result is the writing of the walls in the at-Taqy Islamic boarding school loaded with basic concepts of Sufism, namely about Fana, Wahdatul Wujud, Taubat and Muhasabah.

Abstract

This paper discusses spiritual and fiqh (Islamic Jurisprudence) aspects of music in relation to two classical Sufi masters i.e, Abū Naṣr al-Sarrāj al-Ṭūsi (378/988) and Alī b. Uthmān al-Jullabi al-Ḥujwīrī (465/1072). It particularly focuses on their two masterpieces i.e., Kitāb al-Luma’ and Kashfu al-Maḥjūb. It further compares three specific points; permissibility of music, listening to Quran and poetry and the state of ecstasy in auditing music. Based on this study, it is found that the Sufi Masters observed the matter of spirituality can be combined and approached with strict obedience through rigidly practicing fiqh. Yet, it should be noted that spirituality of music will be of course beyond dicta of jurisprudence by the fact that spirituality is inward thing while shari’ah (which is narrowly used to point religious law) is outward one. As to the matter of listening to Quran and poetry, both sufi masters offer more emphasis on listening Qur’an than poetry or odes. Nevertheless, they did not negate the importance of listening to poetry, poems and odes. It is evidenced by a ḥadīth stating that indeed there is wisdom in every poetry. In terms of the state of ecstasy, the two masters offer tawājud (artificial wajd). Tawājud is aimed to gain wajd by representing to one’s mind the bounties and evidences of God, and thinking of union (ittiḥād) and wishing for the practices of Muslim saints.

Abstract

The paper discusses the teachings of nationalism by KHR. Ahmad al-Hadi bin Dahlan al-Falaky in his poems. This research tried to explore aspects of local wisdom and accordingly to figure out the values of nationalism within the poems of a traditional Kiai living in the Balinese society where the majority were Hindu’s people. Data were primarily sourced and collected from “Kumpulan Sya’ir KHR. Ahmad al-Hadi bin Dahlan al-Falaky (1895-1976).”It uses discourse analysis to reveal the meaning of the poems. This finding shows that the poems firmly teach and emphasize the values of nationalism to society. In this regard, such values are vital to fostering the people’s nationalism for living side by side and in harmony with “the others” in the Balinese local context to the Indonesian national context and dealing with the challenging globalized ways of life.

Abstract

This paper engages with the theological discourse on the state of al-Mahdi in Shi‘i tradition and the Peaceful Kingdom of Christianity. It focuses on two particular narratives, Quranic one focusing on Shi‘i tafsir Qur’an 24:55 and Biblical one concerning on Isaiah 11:1-19. This study employs library research looking specifically at Qur’anic and Biblical commentaries. By comparing the texts, it is found out that the first insists on several requirements to realize the promise of God (the state of al-Mahdî) by performing active struggles i.e. possessing strong faith and doing righteous action. On the other hand, the latter provides the description of the ideal circumstance when Messiah comes to a region in which both the ruler and the ruled do active struggles. The first still emphasizes the importance of strong faith while the second doesn’t. Yet, both narratives share that active struggles and righteous actions must be at stake.

Abstract

This research is aimed to dismantle and to reveal the religious moderation values from a local legacy of a Muslim cleric/kyai’s reflective thought written in a Javanese-Arabic poem (syiir) “Tanpo Waton” authored by KH. Muhammad Nizam As-Shofa, a local kyai and a spiritual master of the Naqsyabandiyyah Kholidiyyah sufi order. What remains interesting in this syiir is that it has been inaugurated by the national figure of pluralism as well as the fourth president of Indonesia, KH. Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur) through his popular melodious chanting. This is a qualitative-descriptive research. Data collection in this study uses documentation, with a content and discourse analysis technique through the lens of religious moderation concept as the currently Indonesian grand narrative campaign for religious harmony. The analysis then entails the production of data in which there are textual and contextual meaning implied within the syiir which emphasizes how important it is to stick with the values of religious moderation for building Indonesian harmony and strengthening national unity within diversity. The religious moderation narrative within the syiir indeed embeds the values of nationalism, tolerance, non-violence and local wisdom respect. Such values are among the pivotal elements to teach and disseminate towards Indonesian generations for the sake of Indonesian harmony.

Abstract

This study focuses on religio-cultural values and meanings within the ritual of Jamasan Bende (Bende washing) on 10th Rabi’ul Awal in Bumijawa, Tegal, Central Java, Indonesia. The topic is interesting as religious and cultural values intermingle within a local practice. It can be seen from how the ritual is accompanied by the recitation of the holy verses of the Qur'an. It signifies that ancient ritual traditions have begun to fade in society because they are considered to contain mystical beliefs and heretical elements handed down from the inhabitants’ ancestors. However, the successors have been trying to advocate and revitalize it instead of abolishing it. It is qualitative research that serving as a field study. The approach used in this research is phenomenology. It digs deeper into interviewing people practicing the ritual and documenting things concerning it. It employs magi theory and theoretical stances from Marshall’s ritual theory that heavily focuses on the issue of religious ritual simultaneously.

Abstract

This study aims to elucidate the proportional relationship between Islam and Javanese culture through the analysis of the Rewanda offering tradition in Semarang. Utilizing Emile Durkheim's theory of the sacred and the profane as the analytical framework, this research identifies and classifies the elements of the Rewanda tradition into two main categories: sacred and profane. The study employs a descriptive qualitative method through observation, interviews, and literature review. Firstly, the research reveals the sacred elements within the Rewanda offering tradition, which include religious rituals, ancestor worship, and spiritual symbolism that reinforce Islamic values within the context of Javanese culture. These elements demonstrate that the tradition functions not only as a means of worship but also as a medium for strengthening spiritual and social bonds within the community. Secondly, the study classifies the profane elements of the tradition, encompassing aspects of daily life and social interactions related to the practice of the tradition. These profane elements reflect cultural adaptation and social interactions accompanying the ritual, showing how the tradition integrates with the everyday life of the Semarang community. The theoretical implications of this research offer a deeper understanding of how the Rewanda tradition merges sacred and profane elements and highlights its role as a bridge between religion and culture. This study enriches the literature on the relationship between religion and culture and provides valuable insights into the dynamics of local traditions in preserving cultural heritage and spiritual values in contemporary society.
