Abstract

Islam puts men and women in an equal position; what distinguishes them is their degree of pity. However, this egalitarian principle has not always been true in practice. Gender biases can still be found not only in the society in general but also in particular at school and in the textbooks used. This study is aimed to examine critically gender biases in the school textbooks especially on Islamic Religious Education books. The study analyzes four Islamic Education Textbooks published by four different publishers, namely Esis, Yudistira, Tiga Serangkai and Erlangga. The study’s methodological approach is inquiry qualitative and uses content analysis. The study demonstrates that the textbooks examined echo biases in the form of marginalization, subordination, work burden and stereotyping imposed on a particular gender. Male biases are present in most aspects of the book structure such as in the form of question, expression, narratives and illustration.

Abstract

Radicalism and terrorism have anxiously attracted the world community. Ironically, the terms have been labeled to Islam and the Muslims. This article focuses on how does Muhammadiyah as one of the Indonesian largest Islamic organizations respond to the issue of radicalism in Indonesia? Based on field research where the data is gathered through interview, observation, and documentary study, the research puts emphasis on the responses of Muhammadiyah toward the idea and movement which attempt to establish Islamic state; its responses to the Western countries and the unbelievers; its interpretation of jihad as an obligatory war against the unbelievers; and its idea on legalization of suicide bombings. The study indicates that Muhammadiyah, particularly in the North Sumatera, rejects any radical movement along with its ideology in Indonesia. Muhammadiyah sees that NKRI (The Unity State of the Republic of Indonesia) has been an ideal model of state and it is a blessing of God that must be preserved and protected. Muhammadiyah condemns anyone who justifies violent acts and commits murder and suicide bombings in the name of religion. Muhammadiyah also asserts that radicalism is a threat toward world peace and it has no correlation with the Islamic teachings.

Abstract

At present, there are two trending topic studies in the world of education that are hotly discussed, namely character education and local wisdom (indigenization). "Urang Gayo" is one of the ethnic groups in Indonesia that is rich in the noble values of Adat and its culture, until now they are still holding fast to defend it, because they believe that the customs and culture of Gayo can guide them in creating harmonization in the community, forming or fostering character, and does not conflict with the values of Islamic teachings. The internalization of Peri Mestike in education is part of efforts to foster character and as an effort to preserve the values of indigenous wisdom and culture of Gayo. The purpose of this study is to determine the importance of the internalization of the "Peri Mestike" (PM) Gayo philosophy in fostering the character of students, as well as the internalization process. The method used is a qualitative method with the ethnopedagogic approach, the data conclusions using the interview method with the strategy of "Swelling Gengku", (the method of imagery and class). This study shows that education must synergize with local wisdom in fostering the character of students because the culture is their identity. The results showed the importance of PM in internalizing and integrating with education as local wisdom and in schools, as for the process found first; through understanding PM by presenting qualified figures, second; with integration in learning material, third; through extracurricular activities, photos or posters that read PM sentences. Furthermore, the school through the principal's policy will continue to try to formulate with the teachers so that the PM can be a subject of local content.
