Abstract

BINUS students are supposed to increase their English competence indicated by their TOEFL scores. This paper aims to observe the differences between studens TOEFL scores obtained when they entered BINUS and the scores after they joined TOEFL courses at BINUS for one year. The participants were 121 students. The data for the entrance test were taken from the BINUS data center and the final test data were taken from their final test at English class. The data were analysed using statistics especially the descriptive statistics, comparing means, and correlation. To support the quantative data, a set of questionnaires was distributed to those 121 students. The results show that the students’ TOEFL scores have increased significantly in the final test compared to those in the entrance test. The low achiever students showed a better performance than the higher ones. Students’ motivation and background support their English study. Students proved to have the most problem in listening. The results of the research are expected to be the input for English lecturers to improve their teaching especially the existence of SALLC (Self Access Language Learning Center).

Abstract

Machine translation is one of the technological advances that can help the translator to do the translation functions easier and faster. The purpose of this article is to analyze whether the machine translation can be relied upon as a substitute translator. From the analysis, it can be concluded that the existing machine translation cannot replace a translator because of its limitations, especially on understanding the context and cultural situation in a nation. Therefore, this machine is only in assisting the process of translation. The method used is the literature analysis. It analyzes the book translated by translator and translated by translation machine and it turns out that the book translated by a machine is not accurately comprehended.

Abstract

The difficulty of a teacher to teach a second language to students can be addressed by contrastive analysis, where it is assumed that learning a second language is influenced by the first language acquisition. The purpose of this article is to describe the level of a comparable degree of passive sentences in Indonesian and English to provide benefits as a reference in the teaching of English as a second language. This study was conducted with qualitative methods, the reference library of resources Indonesian and English. Passive Sentences in Indonesian views of the structure using the "di", "ter" or "ke", in English we use "to be + past participle" depends on the time it happened. Context of the sentence must be considered so that the meaning contained in them can be understood. Once analyzed and searched in the matching and comparison of passive sentences in Indonesian and English, the authors have found similarities and differences which can be structurally or pragmatically.
