Abstract

M/T to Morino Fushigi no Monogatari, a novel by Oe Kenzaburo, offered a different history narration with legitimate history narration of Japan. In Oe’s perspective, the legitimate history of Japan was central to the Emperor. By the novel he attempted to narrate a history from another perspective that was from the perspective of a society of a hidden village in the basin of rural Shikoku forest who were culturally marginalized. The narrator in this novel had a responsibility to continue the narrative tradition to construct village history. The narrator constructed it by taking up history sources from that represent various perspectives. A history constructed by the narrator tended to inverse Japan’s official history, and narrated what is being disclaimed in Japan’s official history. That village history also pointed out that there was not any single version in history narration. Those various history versions coexist and are placed in equality in the novel.

Abstract

The conclusion of the Pacific War witnessed the emergence of contradictory narratives that soon competed for ownership of Japan’s official wartime memory. As ardent nationalism was replaced with pacifism and a global outlook, Japan’s total military defeat was largely refigured into a narrative of victimhood. Simultaneously, the aggression of the past was purposefully downplayed. Pacifism is enshrined in the Article 9 of Japan’s Constitution. That clause represents a cherished part of the country’s postwar identity. This study investigates the memory of war as described in Sakae Tsuboi’s novel, Nijushi no Hitomi, that depicts the lives of a teacher’s and her 12 students in a hamlet on Shodo Island who experienced the Pacific War. Using Sakae’s novel as a lens, this paper considers Japanese memory of war with from the dialectic of the nationalistic spirit propagated during the war and the later commitment to pacifism. Employing the narrative discourse theory proposed by Genette, the narration of war memory is explored through the analysis of the actions and events surrounding the characters in the text. Narrative voices in the text are examined to reveal the perspective of each character in forming different memories of the war. The memories of war are discussed based on Hashimoto Akiko's theory which proposed that there are three kinds of Japanese memories about the war; i.e as a hero, as a victim and as a perpretator. This paper shows that there are two kinds of narrative in the Japanese memory related to war: i.e memory of victimhood and heroism. Memories of victimhood provoked trauma which in part gave rise to the Japanese commitment toward pacifism. At the same time, memories of heroism can lead to unvarnished nationalism, with can still cause the commitment to pacifism to waver.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the effectiveness of the work-life balance policies implemented in the Directorate General of Treasury of the Ministry of Finance. The focus is on assessing the impact of these programs on employees' in-role performance. A survey was conducted among supervisory and executive staff, with a total of 5,877 employees, resulting in 1,112 respondents. The data were statistically analyzed using SPSS. Correlation analysis was used to determine the correlation between demographic variables, independent variables, and dependent variables, and hierarchical multiple regression analysis was employed to test hypotheses. The results of the data analysis indicate that work-life balance policies do not have a positive and significant effect on employee in-role performance, suggesting that the applied work-life balance policies are not effective. The expected positive implication of this research is to provide insights and perspectives for policymakers regarding the implementation of work-life balance programs to ensure their effectiveness in helping employees balance their work and personal lives.

Abstract

Government policies related to the acceleration of halal certification for 10 million SMEs in 2024 will work well only if business actors, especially small and micro enterprises (SMEs), understand the importance of halal certification for their products, understand the procedures for applying for halal certificates, and business actors comply requirements in registering its products for halal certification. In fact, the importance of halal certification has not become knowledge that can be accepted by business actors. In addition, the halal certification procedure has not been well socialized among micro and small business actors. For this reason, community service related to halal awareness literacy and the dissemination of halal certification by the self-declare scheme of business actors among small and micro business actors is very important to do. The service team from the School of Strategic and Global UI Studies and the UI Halal Center have carried out community service with halal-aware literacy activities, socialization of submitting halal certificates through the siHalal application and assistance in the process of halal products as a procedure for submitting halal certificates for small and micro business actors in Tangerang Banten district
