Abstract

Strategic Planning to Improve the Management of Small Holders tea Tea Plantations : Case Study of Pasirjambu and Ciwidey District, Bandung RegencyAbstract Tea smallhoders in Indonesia have the potential to give rise to national's tea industry as the proportion of area of the smallholders is bigger than the state and private plantations (45,8%) and as their production growth has the tendency to increase by 0.77% in 2001-2011. Despite of those facts, the productivity of tea smallholders is still very low compared to the state and private large plantations. There were a number of aid programs aimed to give rise to the tea smallholders' productivity, but they did not succeed significantly. Since productivity is an indicator of business' competitive advantage, the factors which influence management of the business of tea smallholders should be identified and in order to improve it, steps of strategic planning is needed. This study is aimed to identify the internal and external factors related to tea smallholders' management and to formulate a strategic planning to the management improvement initiatives. Method used in this study was the approach of the strategic management stages to identify key factors and to formulate a strategic planning as the recommendation of solution for the problem. Data collection for this study was conducted through observations, interviews, and questionnaires; and the analysis technique used for strategy formulation was hybrid of the strenght-weakness-opportunity-threat (SWOT) and the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) analysis. Identification of internal and external key factors of smallholders' management resulted in 5 strengths factors, 3 opportunities, 5 weaknesses, and 4 threats. From the SWOT-AHP analysis, the strategy recommended to solve the problem was WO1: horizontal integration between farmers to undertake group's collective cultivation. This strategy emphazies cooperation of farmers whithin a group to manage tea cultivation which is ecologically and economically sustainable in cultivation development, institution's fuctional strengthening, and market accruing. Keywords: Tea smallholders, Strategic planning, SWOT-AHP.

Abstract

Cihampelas Stream is a tributary of the Citarum that flows across the Regency and Bandung area along 8,5 km. Cihampelas Stream are utilized by the community for domestic activities, tourism, agriculture, and fisheries. This study aims to determine the water quality based on Macrozoobenthos Index of Biotic Integrity and Periphytic Diatom Index of Biotic Integrity and its correlation with the Pollution Index (water classes). This research was conducted at four Cihampelas Stream stations representing the minimal areas of disturbance to the predicted areas of disturbance such as Cilengkrang, Cisurupan, Pasanggrahan, and Mekarmulya. Water sampling, macrozoobenthos, and periphytic diatom was conducted from July to September 2016 four times at two-week intervals. Assessment of water quality using Macrozoobenthos Index of Biotic Integrity shows that Cihampelas Stream is categorized from very good to bad category with index value ranging from 4?18. The water quality of the Cihampelas Stream shows very good to bad category based on the value of the Periphytic Diatom Index of Biotic Integrity which ranges from 3?15. Based on Pollution Index, along Cihampelas Stream is fulfilled class I to exceed class IV of water quality standard. Spearman correlation analysis results shows that Pollution Index (water classes) has negative correlation and stronger to Macrozoobenthos Index of Biotic Integrity compared to Periphytic Diatom Index of Biotic Integrity.Development of bioassessment methode for water quality assessment of Cihampelas Stream in the Citarum River Basin

Abstract

The Cihampelas River is one of river that crosses the Regency and City of Bandung, West Java, with a length of 8.5 km. This study aims to assess the water quality status of Cihampelas River based on the STORET method and Pollution Index. The research was conducted at four stations based on the level of anthropogenic activity from July to September 2016. Measurements of the physical and chemical parameters of the waters were carried out five times at two-week intervals. Water quality status was assessed using the STORET method and Pollution Index based on the parameters TDS, TSS, pH, DO, BOD, COD, nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, and total phosphorus (TP). Using the STORET method, shows a score of -20 to -46 in the category of moderately to severely polluted waters. Based on the Pollution Index method, the waters of the Cihampelas River show lightly to severely polluted conditions with a score of 1.14 to 44.66. The water quality status of the Cihampelas River shows a decreasing trend from the upstream to the downstream.

Abstract

It has been recognized in many studies that wildlife tourism practices might generate a negative impact on wildlife, particularly during the reproductive period. Some wildlife may lower their sensitivity towards tourist presence, for instance in Komodo. Understanding to what extenthabituation occurs in Komodo would be necessary for tourism management in Komodo National Park (KNP). Therefore, this study aimed to identify the response of Komodo to tourist presence during mating and nesting activities. The observation was conducted in Loh Buaya, which is one of the tourism sites in KNP. Komodo’s responses were divided into (1) avoidance; (2) neutral; and (3) aggressive under categorized stimulus: tourist number (i.e., < 5 persons; 5-10 persons; and > 10 persons) and distance (i.e., < 5 m; 5-10 m; and > 10 m). Correlation analysis was performed to identify any influences on mating and nesting activities. Our results revealed that Komodo inhabiting tourism facilities havebeen habituated to tourist presence. Different tourist frequencies did not influence Komodo mating activities (r(20)= 0.036, p=0.873), the nest preparing activity (i.e., digging proportion; r(22)= 0.054, p=0.803) and the guarding activity (i.e., nesting proportion; r(22)= 0.314, p=0.135).Nevertheless, our results indicated possible impacts due to tourism activities and its supporting facilities, such as dominated mating pairs, threats to female reproductive success, and human-Komodo conflicts. Therefore, habituation evi- dence must be carefully considered in order todevelop more corresponding strategies and achieve sustainable tourism practices.

Abstract

The characteristics of island vegetation greatly influence the activities of endemic birds in island areas, such as the Moluccan endemic megapodes (Eulipoa wallacei) on Haruku Island. Therefore, it is essential to identify the specific location of the habitat utilized by individual birds for their daily activities on Haruku Island and to analyze the composition of the vegetation and the variety of plant species. Identification of bird habitat locations using radio-tracking on four newly hatched chicks and four adult birds. A total of 330 individual tracking points were recorded during the study period. The vegetation sample used a total of 420 plots for seedlings, saplings, poles, and trees which were then analyzed for importance value index (IVI), diversity, evenness, and similarity. We found that the Tanjung Maleo forest was their nesting habitat, while the Marunimei and Lalean forests were their daily habitats. A total of 91 plant species and 60 plant families were discovered with the vegetation diversity value of the three habitats was moderate (H’mean = 3.07) and tended to be dominated by air plant (Kalanchoe pinnata), sword fern (Nephrolepsis exalta), cogongrass (Imperata cylindrica), coco-grass (Cyperus rotundus), Indian camphorweed (Pluchea indica), and lanzone (Lansium domesticum) (Emean = 0.88), and have a relatively low level of species similarity between habitats (SImean = 38.30%). We found that the daily habitat of the Moluccan megapode on Haruku Island was around their nesting sites and has a complex structure because it was composed four vegetation strata. Therefore, for conservation purposes, habitat management must prioritize preserving forest habitats around the bird nesting sites.
